Even though it’s been two years since Star Trek: Picard season 3 concluded, my eagerness to watch Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) command the USS Enterprise-G in Star Trek: Legacy hasn’t waned one bit. Under the guidance of showrunner Terry Matalas, Star Trek: Picard season 3 was one of the most highly-anticipated versions of Star Trek on Paramount+. Episodes from Picard season 3 consistently ranked in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, and the reunion of the cast from Star Trek: The Next Generation sparked interest among both longtime fans and new viewers alike.
Regardless of the high acclaim and achievements of Star Trek: Picard season 3, Paramount+ opted against producing a follow-up or sequel. The finale of Star Trek: Picard season 3 laid the groundwork for further journeys aboard the USS Enterprise-G, featuring Captain Seven of Nine, Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), and hints at appearances from Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s iconic characters. Both the cast, creative crew, and fans are eager for a continuation under the name Star Trek: Legacy.
Legacy. Yet, time may be consuming like a fire, but our intense passion for Star Trek: Legacy has not diminished.
Picard Season 3 Left Questions Star Trek: Legacy Still Needs To Answer
Fans Want To Know What Happens Next To The USS Enterprise-G
The intriguing hint at potential storylines in Star Trek: Legacy, following the conclusion of Star Trek: Picard season 3, has left fans eagerly anticipating resolution to the unanswered questions posed by the final episode. For instance, the identity of Captain Seven of Nine’s warp command remains a mystery, as well as the current status of her relationship with Commander Raffi Musiker and the romantic development between Jack Crusher and Lieutenant Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut). Furthermore, fans are curious about how the beloved character Captain Liam Shaw might be brought back to life.
Two years down the line, there’s been a significant suspense surrounding Star Trek: Picard season 3: What is Q’s (John de Lancie) intention towards Jack Crusher, and how has Q returned after supposedly dying in Star Trek: Picard season 2? Other curiosities include the identity of Commodore Geordi La Forge’s (LeVar Burton) wife, who is also the mother of Sidney and Ensign Alandra La Forge (Mica Burton), and fans are eager to learn about Data’s (Brent Spiner) adaptation to his human form. Lastly, there’s much anticipation about whether Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) have entered a romantic relationship?
Star Trek: Legacy’s 25th Century Is The Most Interesting Era To Explore
Star Trek’s TNG Era Has To Keep Moving Forward
Intriguingly, the advancement of modern Star Trek to the 25th century in season 3 of Star Trek: Picard was a highly captivating move. However, this progression has stalled without the introduction of Star Trek: Legacy. The 24th century era, consisting of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and now Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy, is the most extensive, productive, and well-received era in the Star Trek timeline. However, it currently remains in a state of perpetual hiatus.
In the year 2002, after the release of Star Trek: Nemesis, the 24th-century timeline from Star Trek: The Next Generation remained largely untouched, save for a brief appearance in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek (2009). However, with the advent of Star Trek: Picard, followed by Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy, the TNG era was reinvigorated. Unfortunately, all these shows have now concluded on Paramount+. This is a disheartening situation given that this 25th-century era of Star Trek is where the largest portion of Star Trek‘s fanbase has the most emotional attachment to. The 25th century, the final frontier, still awaits further exploration.
Will Star Trek: Legacy Ever Happen?
Hope Springs Eternal For Starships Named Enterprise
Two years on, it seems that the prospect of Star Trek: Legacy has waned, despite a passionate fan campaign and backing from the cast and creative team of Star Trek: Picard. They continue to express interest in continuing with Star Trek: Legacy, but their plans are currently overshadowed by Paramount+’s Star Trek schedule for the next two years. This includes seasons 3 and 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and seasons 1 and 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
It appears that only Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy have definite plans moving forward, as there seems to be little progress or discussion about Star Trek: Legacy. With the creator of Star Trek: Picard season 3 working on other projects and the cast and crew having moved on, it remains uncertain if Star Trek: Legacy will become a reality.
Whenever Terry Matalas, actors like Todd Stashwick, Jeri Ryan, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, and Ed Speleers, and directors such as Jonathan Frakes are inquired about “Star Trek: Legacy”, they all express a resounding interest. Perhaps once Paramount Studios’ sale to Skydance Media is completed, there could be a reevaluation of the Star Trek franchise that might catalyze the production of “Star Trek: Legacy”.
Only 1 Star Trek Show Has A Chance To Tie Into Legacy
Will Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Reference The USS Enterprise-G?
In essence, while it’s unlikely that Star Trek: Legacy will be revisited, there’s a possibility that elements from it might show up in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. On the other hand, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set in the 23rd century, whereas Star Trek: Starfleet Academy unfolds in the 32nd century, following the conclusion of Star Trek: Discovery’s fifth season. Given its educational setting, Starfleet Academy might draw upon the 25th-century adventures of the USS Enterprise-G for references.
As a devotee, I can’t help but feel a strong connection when I imagine The Doctor from “Star Trek: Voyager” as my instructor at Starfleet Academy. His presence is like a bridge to the time of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Activated in the 24th century, he’s nearly 900 years old by now, having lived through the 25th century. He would have witnessed the adventures of Captain Seven of Nine and the USS Enterprise-G.
While it may be a stretch and not as fulfilling as watching “Star Trek: Legacy” become a reality, references to these events in “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” could keep the hope for the continuation of “Star Trek: Picard” season 3 alive.
