In December 2019, Star Ocean: First Departure R was launched exclusively as a digital game for PS4 and Switch consoles. However, Limited Run Games will soon release three physical editions of the game. The standard edition costs $39.99, the SteelBook Edition is priced at $79.99, while the Ultimate Edition retails at $199.99.

Originally launched in 1996, Star Ocean quickly amassed a devoted following due to its innovative approach as one of the early real-time RPGs, enabling players to impact the story’s conclusion through their choices in actions and dialogue. Fast-forwarding to the present day, First Departure R has now incorporated pre-rendered 3D backdrops into the game, as well as new character designs, animated sequences, fully vocalized dialogues, and additional playable characters.
Star Ocean First Departure R represents a harmonious fusion of science fiction and fantasy elements, offering players a rejuvenated take on the initial voyage of this venerable franchise, set in the tranquil village of Kratus. The story follows a youthful Roddick and his companions as they strive to find a cure for an enigmatic illness causing people to petrify. Their investigation takes them to Mt. Metorx, where their local struggle intersects with the appearance of off-world travelers. Initially a survival quest, their journey eventually unfolds into a cosmic odyssey traversing galaxies, delicately tying together themes of fate, time, and the fight for their world’s salvation.
The initial release of “First Departure R,” initially introduced as a digital-exclusive in 2019, is now making a transition into the real world, offering players a chance to own one of three captivating physical versions of the game, available on both Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
