Star-Lord’s Marvel Return Comes With One Crucial Detail

These days, Chris Pratt is the face most people associate with Star-Lord. But for fans who’ve followed the Marvel Comics character for years, he has a different, classic appearance – and that look is returning soon.

The very first version of Star-Lord will be back in a new one-shot comic called Marvel Gold ’76 #1. This is a nod to 1976, the year the character originally appeared in Marvel Preview #4, created by Steve Englehart and Steve Gan. Back then, Peter Quill wasn’t a legendary outlaw – he was an astronaut-in-training trying to learn about his mysterious origins when he met an alien being called the Master of the Sun, who transformed him into a hero.

The alien gave Quill a cool new uniform: a blue suit with an owl-like mask featuring pointed sections on top and big eye lenses. Fans will see this classic costume again when Star-Lord shows up in Marvel Gold ’76 #1.

The character has changed a lot over time, particularly after becoming more popular thanks to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films. Chris Pratt’s portrayal of Quill as a charming and laid-back character influenced Marvel Comics to update the character, both in personality and appearance, to be more like the version seen in the movies.

Since returning to Earth, Star-Lord has gone through a big transformation. He’s become much darker after taking charge of the Galactic Council and unfairly blaming the Skrull Empire for recent tragedies in the Imperial storyline. Because of this, it will be great for fans to see Peter Quill return to his former self.

Marvel Gold ’76 #1 Brings Multiple 50-Year-Old Characters Together

Okay, so Star-Lord isn’t the only character to get hyped about in Marvel Gold ’76 #1. It turns out he’s teaming up with some other heroes, and they all share this really cool, specific thing that makes them… well, them.

This special comic brings together several famous Marvel characters who are all celebrating 50 years in 2026 for a single, thrilling adventure. The story will feature a lineup of some of Marvel’s most well-known and beloved heroes.

Thanos has recruited the deadly assassin Bullseye for a mission that could wipe everything out! Now, Star-Lord, Nova, and Jack of Hearts must race through New York City to stop him in an all-out, no-holds-barred battle. Prepare for one of the most intense fights the Marvel Universe has ever seen!

It’s not uncommon to see Star-Lord team up with cosmic heroes like Nova and Jack of Hearts against villains such as Thanos. But the addition of Bullseye to this group is unexpected, even considering they all first appeared in 1976. This unusual combination promises a fresh and interesting story.

Nova, also known as Richard Rider, is a space-faring law enforcer created by Marv Wolfman and John Romita Sr. He first appeared in a comic book called The Man Called Nova. This same creative team – Wolfman and Romita Sr. – also introduced the character in Daredevil #131.

John Hart becomes the superhero Jack of Hearts after an accident with alien genetics, and he first appeared in The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #22. The only significant character featured in Marvel Gold ’76 #1 who wasn’t introduced that year was , who was created by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich in 1973 in The Invincible Iron Man #55.

Okay, so I just checked out Marvel Gold ’76 #1, and it’s really cool! Stephanie Phillips wrote it – she’s done some amazing stuff with characters like Spider-Gwen, the X-Men, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The art is by Madibek Musabekov, who you might recognize from his work on a bunch of Star Wars comics for Marvel, including Shadow of Maul. Definitely worth a look if you’re into that kind of thing!

Marvel Gold ’76 #1 hits the shelves on Sept. 9.
