Star Citizen's Celebrity-Filled Squadron 42 Gets Tentative 2026 Date

As someone who has been following Star Citizen and Squadron 42 for nearly a decade, I must say that my enthusiasm for these projects has gone through more ups and downs than a spacecraft in turbulence! It’s like watching a rollercoaster with no end station – exciting, nerve-wracking, and always leaving me hanging on the edge of my seat.

Star Citizen has been under development for an impressive 12 years and counting, making it one of the longest-developed games ever. Its standalone counterpart, Squadron 42, is almost equally long in the making, announced 10 years ago. During this year’s CitizenCon 2954, Cloud Imperium didn’t specify a precise release date for Squadron 42 in 2026, but CEO Chris Roberts expressed confidence that it would be released within the next two years.

To support his assertion, Roberts displayed an hour-long demonstration of Squadron 42, which encountered a few hiccups during play. However, it effectively demonstrated the gameplay reminiscent of Wing Commander and its high-octane sci-fi action. There are numerous cinematic scenes in the video as well.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been blown away by the star-studded cast that’s graced this game with their presence. Legends like Mark Hamill, known for his roles as the Wing Commander and Luke Skywalker, and Gary Oldman, have lent their voices and likenesses to the game. Not to mention, heavyweights such as Andy Serkis, Henry Cavill, Gillian Anderson, Mark Strong, Jack Huston, Ben Mendelsohn, and many others. Cloud Imperium must’ve had a hefty budget to snag such A-list talent, considering Squadron 42 and Star Citizen have raked in over $700 million through crowdfunding since 2012.

Before CitizenCon 2954, Cloud Imperium reportedly made its employees work seven days a week in a demanding, deadline-driven manner to prepare for the convention. Despite this intense effort, the demo encountered several glitches and crashes, prompting an apology from Roberts. It was announced at last year’s CitizenCon that Squadron 42 was “feature-complete,” but it is clear that there is still a significant amount of work left to be done.

Regarding Star Citizen, it’s important to note that this flagship project by Cloud Imperium is currently in its alpha stage, and a definite release date has yet to be announced. Interestingly, earlier this year, they unveiled an expansive $48,000 package including every ship in the game. Fingers crossed, one day players will receive a complete game to complement their collection of ships.
