The science fiction space odyssey by Cloud Imperium Games, known as Star Citizen, has been under construction for more than ten years without an apparent finish line. However, this prolonged development period hasn’t deterred its supporters, as the project recently achieved another remarkable crowdfunding milestone.
Star Citizen initially made its debut as a vast multiplayer cosmos, incorporating space battles and celestial trading, way back in 2012 during the launch of its Kickstarter campaign. Notably, it set a record for the highest sum ever crowdsourced when it raked in an impressive $39,680,576.
About 13 years have passed since its inception, and the project is still in the early stages of alpha testing, which is quite different from the original plan to release it in 2014.
Even though I’ve already spent a small fortune on this game, I can’t resist pouring in even more cash as it keeps breaking new records. Just recently, it reached yet another mind-blowing milestone.
Star Citizen edges closer to the $1 billion milestone
By April 9th, the crowdfunding for Star Citizen has reached and surpassed the $800 million mark, a feat made possible by more than 5.5 million individual players. This is an achievement that follows its previous significant milestone of reaching $700 million back in May 2024.
The highly anticipated space simulation game has retained its status as one of the priciest video games ever produced, even without a publishing company’s support.
Although we’ve seen unprecedented figures, there remains no definite launch date to note down yet. The alpha version, which players have enjoyed for quite some time now, hasn’t led to a full 1.0 release, signifying the original concept.
Indeed, only one segment of the game has a projected release date, which is Squadron 42 – a single-player version featuring renowned actors such as Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, and Gary Oldman. A sneak peek at this section was unveiled during CitizenCon 2024, where developers outlined their goal for a 2026 release.
Although Squadron 42 was deemed “fully featured” in 2023, it’s encountered numerous setbacks and hasn’t yet been released. So, it remains uncertain whether we’ll see it come out next year or not.
Squadron 42, considered complete with all its features by 2023, has faced multiple postponements. It still remains unclear if it will actually be launched in the upcoming year.
Over the past ten years or so, due to substantial funding and lengthy development, Star Citizen has faced significant criticism. In fact, certain players have requested refunds, as reported by Polygon. Despite approaching the $1 billion milestone, it seems the wait for its release may still be prolonged.
