Star Citizen Dev Is Forcing Employees To Work Seven Days A Week - Report

As a long-time supporter of Star Citizen, I must confess that I’m finding myself at a crossroads between my admiration for the game and the recent news about the working conditions at Cloud Imperium Games. Having been part of the gaming community for decades, I’ve seen my fair share of crunch times, but this seems to be pushing it a bit too far.

Despite not yet being fully released from early access, Star Citizen has built up a substantial fanbase and even hosts an annual event called CitizenCon. However, it’s been reported that the game’s developer, Cloud Imperium Games, is making its staff work seven days a week right up to CitizenCon, although the official release date hasn’t been announced yet.

Cloud Imperium Games, according to Insider Gaming, has reportedly sent a message to its staff stating that they must work every day, including weekends, leading up to CitizenCon. Working from home will be allowed only on the Sunday before CitizenCon, but the company expressed a preference for employees to come into work that day as well.

During this critical period, we aim to accomplish two main tasks: completing Star Citizen update 3.24.2 and presenting the Squadron 42 demo for Chapter 1. The report further mentions that employees have been granted the option to earn 12 hours of compensatory time off (TOIL) each week, provided they remain employed by Cloud Imperium Games until Squadron 42 is released. If an employee decides to leave before this point, they will forfeit any accumulated TOIL.

At Manchester, England, CitizenCon is set for October 19-20. In an email update to staff members, Cloud City Games has mentioned that Monday, October 21 will be a free day off. As of now, there’s no news on when Star Citizen will transition from early access to a complete release, but it’s been over a dozen years in development.
