Actor Lee Byung-hun, famously known as the Front Man in Squid Game, shared insights about his character’s role and the original plans for Season 2 that differ significantly from what viewers experienced. However, the discarded concept might be reconsidered for a possible spinoff series.
In simple terms, Season 3 of “Squid Game” on Netflix is scheduled to premiere on June 27, 2025, and will likely conclude the storyline of Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae, also known as Player 456). Yet, it doesn’t necessarily mark the end for the “Squid Game” dystopian TV series franchise.
For the upcoming chapter’s media rounds, Dong-hyuk hinted that he might consider a separate series based on the storyline if it fits right. As of now, there are no definite plans set, but there’s a rich pool of secondary characters to potentially explore.
One possibility could be rephrasing it as: We were initially planning to explore the backstory of Byung-hun’s character, In-ho Hwang, and how he came to be the Front Man, along with a depiction of the early deadly games in Squid Game Season 2. However, the focus has been shifted away from that.
Front Man prequel would be perfect for Squid Game spinoff
During a chat with Forbes, Byung-hun shared insights into the production of the second season, a project that was initiated solely due to fan enthusiasm. In the past, he proposed a prequel centered around the character Front Man, an idea that director Dong-hyuk had previously contemplated as well.
During my work on the drama “Our Blues” on Jeju Island, Director Hwang stopped by for a visit and conversation, even though he was already planning for Squid Game Season 2, as Byung-hun shared with the media.
I inquired from him, “What can we expect for Season 2?” To which he replied, “At the moment, I don’t have any ideas.” Then, I suggested, “Perhaps it could explore how In-ho initially joined the games and what they were like back then?
He mentioned he had similar plans to go that way, but things didn’t unfold as planned. Interestingly, the lead character, referred to as Front Man, played a larger part in the second season of Squid Game.
After that turning point, the tale transitioned from reminiscing about the past to unfolding events happening right now. Frankly, I was taken aback by this shift.” (Byung-hun)
Besides, I found it quite innovative that Hwang In-ho disguised himself as Oh Young-il to join the games. His participation, even to me, was an unexpected twist.
As a devoted fan, I’m convinced that a Squid Game prequel focusing on The Front Man could be an outstanding spinoff. With Byung-hun being one of South Korea’s most esteemed actors, and his character being one of the show’s most intriguing mysteries, it would provide an engaging backstory to this captivating series. Regardless of Squid Game diverging from its original path, the potential for further exploration into The Front Man’s past is too enticing to ignore.
In the second season, we gained deeper insights into his reasons for action: it was revealed that his wife had cirrhosis requiring a liver transplant, all while discovering she was expecting a child.
In a further unfortunate turn of events, he was let go from his job, amassing debts to ruthless lenders, which led him to participate in Squid Game. However, the details about how he came to control the malevolent plot remain unknown.
There’s a lot more about Front Man that can be explored, making him an ideal figurehead for the potential new installment of the Squid Game series if Netflix chooses to continue the storyline.
