In the third season of Squid Game, the reasons behind Player 149 (Jang Geum-ja) taking her own life after the grueling hide-and-seek game are revealed. One of the most intriguing new characters introduced in Season 2 was the mother-son duo who joined as players: Geum-ja (Kang Ae-sim) and her son, Yong-sik (Yang Dong-geun, also known as Player 007). During the thrilling games depicted in Squid Game’s second season, both Players 149 and 007 bravely endured and survived three terrifying contests.
Before Season 3 of “Squid Game,” it was revealed by actress Kang Ae-sim, who plays Geum-ja, that she completed her filming in six months instead of a year like most other main cast members. This could suggest that Geum-ja’s character may meet an untimely end rather than lasting throughout the series. In the final season of “Squid Game,” Geum-ja’s story took a tragic turn when her son acted impulsively against one of the players, leading to dire consequences for her character.
How Does 149 Die In Squid Game?
In the third season of “Squid Game,” the storyline kicked off with the fourth contest, called Hide and Seek. This game tested the bonds and allegiances among the players. They were split into two groups: red and blue teams. The blue team members acted as hiders, while the red ones were tasked with tagging them. A 30-minute time limit was set for this game, and the blue team, armed with a key each, needed to locate the exit without getting caught by their opponents. The unexpected twist in this scenario is that a mother and son duo are on opposing sides, forcing one to potentially eliminate the other in order to progress (Player 007 was assigned to the red team, while Player 149 joined the blue team).
During the course of the game, it was clear that Player 007 lacked the courage to take anyone’s life. On the other hand, Players 149, 120, and 222 (who was pregnant) formed an alliance to boost their chances of staying alive. However, events took a drastic turn when Player 222 unexpectedly went into labor during the game, causing Player 149 to offer assistance to her within the confines of the time limit. You can learn more about what happened to Player 222 here.
Following the unfortunate demise of Player 120 upon encountering Myung-gi (333) while searching for the exit, Players 149 and 222, accompanied by the baby, immediately made their way towards the exit. However, Yong-sik intercepted them before proceeding through.
As time grew short, a desperate Yong-sik attempted to kill an defenseless Player 222, but Player 149 took an unexpected action – she stabbed her own son, effectively ending his life. This tragic choice made by Player 149 significantly affected the remainder of her path through Season 3.
In an attempt to halt the games by convincing fellow players to vote “no” for the upcoming round, Player 149 was unsuccessful. With her child absent, she saw no purpose in going on, and thus chose to take her own life before the fifth game of Squid Game Season 3, Episode 3.
Geum-ja’s death came at a particularly sad time, as it occurred not long after she fatally struck her son in the chilling aftermath of the hide-and-seek game.
Why Did Player 149 Hang Herself?
In the third episode of Squid Game Season 3, Player 149, or Geum-ja, tragically ended her life. She had entered the games initially due to her son’s overwhelming debts. After her son passed away, she felt she no longer had a reason to strive for victory in the game, as she had lost not only her goal within the competition but also her sense of purpose in life. It was also significant that Geum-ja was overwhelmed by guilt due to her distressing actions.
Prior to ending her life, Player 149 encouraged Player 456 (often referred to as the protagonist of Squid Game Season 3) with an inspiring pep talk about trusting himself to set things straight. She also urged him to ensure the safety of Jun-hee and the baby. Geumja’s selfless act stirred something within Player 456, sparking a newfound determination that fueled him in the climactic stages of the game.
In a conversation with The Wrap, the actress who played Player 149, Kang Ae-sim, elaborated on her character’s choice to end her life, highlighting that “her despair deepened when she lost her only son,” indicating she had nothing left.
Geum-ja is a mother who primarily prioritizes her own son, yet tragically ends up taking his life to safeguard another – a newborn baby. This act of self-defense leaves her with profound guilt. Without her child, she feels hollow, worthless, and bereft of everything that once mattered to her.
In a recent interview, the star of Squid Game also discussed Player 149’s choice to sacrifice her own child. She explained that she did so to ensure the safety of the infant.
I pondered on the process of pregnancy and childbirth – how a woman carries a baby inside her for nine months, and then gives birth to create an entirely new life. Witnessing this with Jun-hee delivering a newborn baby must have filled her mind completely, as she now understands the magnitude of bringing a whole new world into existence. Even if it’s her own son, she may feel compelled to cause him pain in order to ensure his safety. This thought seems to be dominating her thoughts right now.
In the tale, it’s understandable why Geum-ja chose to take her son’s life, as she saw him transform into a terrifying creature before her very eyes. The only means to halt this beast seemed to be by embracing the role of a monster herself.
