By the culmination of Squid Game Season 3, a great deal transpires, but the climactic last scene undeniably holds the most significance – and an unanticipated guest appearance foreshadows David Fincher’s upcoming American adaptation.
1. Take note: If you’ve missed Season 3, be prepared for major plot revelations. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hinted that Squid Game wouldn’t end on a positive note. However, it could’ve been even more grim.
Here’s another option:
2. Watch out! If you haven’t caught up with Season 3, brace yourself for significant spoilers. According to Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game wasn’t going to have a joyful conclusion. But it could’ve been much more bleak.
Indeed, Gi-hun chose to give up his own life to save Jun-hee’s baby during the Squid Game. In a powerful moment, he also delivered one of the series’ most memorable lines, “Humans are…”. Despite the tragic ending, it was evident that the Front Man held great respect for Gi-hun; so much so, that he handed his gold card to Gi-hun’s daughter in Los Angeles following his demise. In a fashion reminiscent of James Bond’s latest adventure, No Time to Die, the Korean island where the game took place was left in ruins.
Here’s what becomes intriguing is as the Lead Singer navigates through Los Angeles, he picks up on a familiar sound of smacking and annoyance, followed by an impressive guest appearance.
Was that Cate Blanchett at the end of Squid Game Season 3?
Indeed! In the third season, we’ll see Cate Blanchett take on the role of The Recruiter for an American adaptation of Squid Game. She can be spotted engaging in a game of ddakji with a man in a back alley, repeatedly slapping him.
While giving him a slap, she spins around and notices the Lead Person gazing from his window. There’s no exchange of words between them, but it’s an intense standoff, filled with tension. She subtly smiles at him, indicating her knowledge of his participation in the affairs, and as he looks away, it’s challenging to discern his emotions; perhaps they’re sadness, curiosity, or a blend of both.
Sure, let’s try it once more,” the man proposes, and Blanchett’s character agrees with a nod, saying, “Of course.” He repeatedly attempts to flip the envelope, but fails each time, leading to her striking him multiple times. As the scene comes to an end, the screen fades to black.
Is David Fincher making an American Squid Game?
David Fincher is currently working on a U.S. adaptation of the popular Korean series Squid Game, set within the same universe. However, it remains undecided which actors will join the cast, whether the Front Man character will appear in the new show, or when exactly this new series will be available to watch.
Back in October 2024, I heard some exciting news about Fincher getting involved in a new English-language adaptation of Squid Game. Later on, during an interview with The Wrap, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that the project was indeed under development.
“I know Netflix has a plan. They are not going to throw this idea away,” he said.
Perhaps I’ll contribute to one of these ventures, either as an advisor or a collaborator. Time will tell! However, it’s important to note that Squid Game season 3 won’t mark the final chapter of this intriguing universe.
There were rumors that the American adaptation might feature Western playground games and challenges, but Blanchett’s character playing ddakji hints at some cultural blending. It seems possible that Fincher’s series could capitalize on the growing popularity of Korean culture due to Squid Game.
