As a die-hard enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement about the jaw-dropping twist at the end of Squid Game Season 2. It’s so mind-blowing, it’d make Sylvester Stallone himself quiver with fear to take it on (a nod to fellow action film aficionados who caught that reference).

It’s great news that we don’t need to wait too much longer to learn about Gi-hun and other characters’ fates, since it’s speculated that Squid Game Season 3 may premiere as early as the summer of 2025.

Waiting for about six months might feel excruciatingly long, but when you consider the extended breaks between certain television seasons, it’s more like a brief moment. This topic has become quite popular among TV enthusiasts like ourselves.

Initially, television shows would debut a new season annually. However, with escalating production costs and premium TV series transforming into long-form movies of approximately 6 to 10 hours, the intervals between seasons have expanded significantly, creating wide gaps.

Three years later…

As a die-hard fan of television series, I must admit that there are quite a few shows out there that have left me waiting for what feels like an eternity between seasons. Take Joel and Ellie from The Last of Us, for instance; it’s been two long years since we last saw them on our screens! Not to mention the delays in House of the Dragon or Severance. However, among all these offenders, I find myself most aggravated by Stranger Things. You see, I grew up in the ’80s, and this show just doesn’t capture the essence of that era as I remember it. The nostalgia trip they try to create feels forced, and the storylines are becoming increasingly predictable. I guess I’m just yearning for a return to form that truly takes me back to my childhood.

We last stepped into Hawkins back in 2022, and we’re yet to return with Stranger Things Season 5 Part 1 (or whatever its current title is by Netflix). Over these three years since then, quite a bit has transpired! To give you a feel for the elapsed time, let me share some key events that have taken place during this period.

Things that have happened in between Stranger Things Seasons 4-5:

  1. My best friend proposed and got married
  2. My other best friend had a kid
  3. My sister got engaged
  4. Another friend got married… wait, should I get married?
  5. I moved house… twice… and city once
  6. The Queen died
  7. We got a new(ish) king
  8. Barbenheimer
  9. We had like eight Prime Ministers
  10. Marvel released six movies and will likely wrap up Phase 5
  11. The DCEU died and was reborn, minus the E, as the DCU
  12. We’ll have had two seasons of White Lotus
  13. Ted Lasso ended
  14. Gavin and Stacey ended
  15. Slow Horses managed to finish three more seasons
  16. Taylor Swift completed her tour. What tour? The world tour!
  17. Oasis reformed (yes, really)
  18. Somehow Trump returned

It’s been quite a while since Stranger Things Season 4 ended, isn’t it? What’s truly astonishing, though, is that there are now individuals who weren’t even conceived when we last saw Eleven and the gang. These aren’t infants; they’re youngsters old enough to have full-fledged conversations with us (Editor’s note: I believe they’re called children).

Wait, what happened?

It’s preposterous, and humor aside, it negatively impacts the narrative flow. The extended breaks between seasons (around two to three years) are ruining the continuity that the series have established, leaving me unenthusiastic for future episodes. Instead, I’m left perplexed when a new season starts due to the confusion about where the story left off.

It’s essential for me to catch up on a Stranger Things recap ahead of Season 5 since it’s been so long, and I fear I’ll forget crucial details. It feels like having to do extra schoolwork to watch TV, which is disappointing. Who has the patience for that?

As someone who has experienced the agonizing wait for new seasons of their favorite shows, I have come to believe that the longest gaps between episodes can be more frustrating than forgetting a grocery list or even the entire plot of eight episodes of television. The unrealistic expectations built up during these extended breaks by devoted fans often lead to disappointment and a sense of disconnection from the show’s world.

Everyone say hi to Chul-su 👋 Season 3 coming in 2025.

On platforms like Reddit, social media, and various corners of the internet, there are communities who have virtually formed their own creative spaces, spending several years collectively crafting an alternate narrative for the series that resonates with them.

When the broadcasted show deviates from what fans imagined, it can leave them somewhat disheartened. Unfortunately, this discrepancy is quite common.

I’m grateful that Squid Game isn’t succumbing to the same pattern. A six-month break is ideal, providing enough anticipation without us potentially exaggerating our expectations in our minds. For older fans like myself, it also means I won’t spend the first episode frantically googling characters while struggling to recall their last appearances.
