In the upcoming Season 3 of Squid Game, the high-ranking characters make a shocking turn, and according to the show’s creator, this unexpected shift was driven by a grim motivation.
In Episode 3 of the last season of Squid Game, the VIPs resurface after the game of Hide and Seek. They disguise themselves as guards and take matters into their own hands, directly eliminating the remaining contestants who are still alive.
In contrast to previous seasons where they merely observed and gambled on the violent contests without directly partaking, this time they joined in the games themselves – a significant shift. Previously, while they enjoyed the carnage from a distance, their hands were not literally soiled by the violence.
In a recent interview, the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, discussed his decision to include high-profile individuals amongst the contestants, noting that some of these participants were in precarious health conditions.
The dark reason behind Squid Game Season 3’s biggest change to the VIPs
Speaking to GQ, Hwang explained: “The VIPs in the previous season were more of commentators.
In this current season, I adapted the games for our special guests, either by modifying the game’s rules or adjusting their sequence, so they could actively take part.
In my creation, various political and economic powerhouses from across the globe have been observed manipulating the rules for their advantage. To mirror this real-world phenomenon, I designed the high-ranking figures in Squid Game to embody such behavior. Consequently, those VIPs are depicted as participating in a deadly Hide and Seek game where they eliminate the losing players.
As a dedicated gamer, I haven’t explicitly named any gaming leaders or significant events since the game’s premiere in 2021. But during an exclusive chat with TIME, I pointed out that the US has been a significant source of inspiration for me.
Previously, the ones truly pulling the strings and wielding power were often concealed from view, giving an impression of a secretive or covert operation. Yet, today, that’s less common, particularly in the United States, as he pointed out.
These days, there’s much discussion surrounding the concept of oligarchy. However, it’s striking to notice that the supposed masters of big tech aren’t shy about disclosing their financial support for particular entities.
Those with true authority over the power and the system are no longer concealed by a veil. They openly remove their disguises, suggesting a bold proclamation: ‘We are the ones managing things. We are the ones in charge.’
The VIP characters were not designed to resemble any particular individuals, but it’s worth noting that some of these characters share a likeness with Elon Musk, according to Hwang.
