Squid Game creator breaks silence on David Fincher’s American ‘remake’

As a die-hard fan of groundbreaking storytellers who masterfully weave intricate narratives that keep me glued to my screen, I couldn’t be more thrilled about David Fincher potentially diving into the Squid Game universe. While Hwang Dong-hyuk’s original masterpiece will always hold a special place in my heart as the record-breaking phenomenon it is, I must admit that the prospect of Fincher’s unique spin on the series has me positively giddy.

According to reports, David Fincher is working on an American adaptation of the popular show “Squid Game”, but its creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, remains unfazed as he considers it to be essentially his creation.

The popular series, Squid Game, currently holds the record as the most-viewed original production on Netflix, surpassing shows like Stranger Things, Wednesday, and Bridgerton in terms of viewership.

It was a bona fide phenomenon, and with Squid Game Season 2 on the horizon, the franchise is gearing up to expand. We’ve already had Squid Game: The Challenge, Netflix’s hit reality show spinoff, and David Fincher is being eyed to develop a new English-language series.

There’s some uncertainty whether the upcoming series will be a retelling or an entirely new story set in the universe of Squid Game. At this point, details about the plot are scarce, other than the fact that it’s being penned by David Kelly from Utopia. However, the creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, is eager to see what form it eventually takes.

At a press event for the upcoming second season, Dong-hyuk mentioned: “While nothing’s been confirmed… as both a filmmaker and series creator, I admire Fincher greatly. His work is fantastic, so if he were to create a remake or spinoff of Squid Game, I, as an enthusiast, would eagerly anticipate it.

I believe he could create an outstanding continuation or spin-off of Squid Game. I’m intrigued to discover what he plans to produce next in that universe, and I’m excited about the prospect. His work is broadening my perspective of the series, but it still feels like a part of my own world.

At first, people weren’t enthusiastic about David Fincher remaking Squid Game; it’s understandable since the original show became incredibly popular and demonstrated that people are willing to watch subtitled content if the story is compelling enough. In other words, some might argue that an English version of the series may be unnecessary.

In other words, Fincher’s style of filmmaking seems fitting for the Squid Game universe. If you haven’t seen 1997’s The Game yet, I recommend watching it: it tells the story of Michael Douglas getting involved in a puzzling game that ultimately consumes his life.

At the press conference, Dong-hyuk described how Season 2 will differ from the initial installment. “This time around, there are numerous fresh elements that we’ve incorporated,” he noted. “As a result, when you watch Season 2, it should feel both comfortably familiar and delightfully novel.

Wait for the second season of Squid Game on Netflix, which starts streaming on December 26th. In the interim, discover the reason behind Gi-hun’s red hair and explore other TV series available this month.
