Splitgate 2 set to relaunch 5 months after being taken down

Splitgate 2 is planning to launch again in December, after the developers took the original version offline five months ago due to problems and a drop in players.

Splitgate quickly became incredibly popular, attracting a large player base with its unique combination of fast-paced shooting, similar to Halo, and portal mechanics inspired by Portal. At its most popular, nearly 70,000 people were playing on PC at the same time.

So, after the first game did pretty well, 1047 Games decided to go all-in on a sequel – and they even added a Battle Royale mode! Unfortunately, it just didn’t catch on like the original. When it launched on June 6th, 2025, only about 25,000 of us were playing on Steam, and honestly, it dropped off fast. Within weeks, over 80% of players had moved on.

The game faced a lot of criticism after its initial release. This included backlash over a controversial hat shown at Summer Game Fest and complaints about the high price of in-game cosmetic items. As a result, the developers had to take the game back into beta testing, and they are now preparing to release it again.

Thanks to all who joined the Splitgate 2 Beta! The Beta Season and any active Battle Passes will end on December 4th, and your rank progress will reset. We’ll be taking the Beta servers offline on the 4th to get ready for a relaunch later in December.

Splitgate 2 relaunching earlier than anticipated

Okay, so as a big Splitgate fan, it was pretty disappointing to hear the devs admit they rushed the launch of Splitgate 2. Basically, they said it wasn’t ready, and now they’re going back to the Beta version to fix things. Unfortunately, that meant some people lost their jobs, but the team that’s left is committed to completely rebuilding core parts of the game – things like how you level up, the maps, and how the game will make money. Hopefully, this means they can really nail it this time around!

After being offline for four months, the studio is preparing to relaunch. Servers will go down on December 4th, with the full relaunch planned for sometime later that month—much sooner than the previously expected early 2026 return.

During the recent outage, the Splitgate developers said they completely overhauled the core elements of the game – things like how portals work, player movement, and shooting – to improve the overall experience.

This time, the team isn’t aiming for a huge initial splash. According to 1047 Games CEO Ian Proulx, they’re focused on releasing a strong game and improving it gradually. They’re avoiding a lot of pre-launch hype and hoping to build momentum over time.

Proulx also joked that he “will not” be making an appearance at this year’s Game Awards.
