Electronic Arts isn’t generally well-liked by players, but Josef Fares, the founder of Hazelight Studios and a frequent collaborator with the publisher, recently defended the company in an interview.
In an interview with The Game Business, Split Fiction‘s director explained that many talented people at EA appreciate Hazelight’s games and generally give them creative freedom. True to form, Josef Fares then pointed out that every publisher has made mistakes at some point.
Despite Electronic Arts (EA) being known for its poor reputation – even being named the “Worst Company in America” by Consumerist in both 2012 and 2013 – Fares felt the company wasn’t receiving entirely deserved criticism.
Gamers have plenty of reasons to criticize EA, so many that it feels like a topic worthy of its own Wikipedia article. Fans have expressed concerns about how EA has handled studios like BioWare and popular series like Titanfall and Battlefield. Recently, the company cancelled some highly anticipated games and let go of a large number of employees. However, EA isn’t the only major gaming company to make these kinds of business decisions.
Everyone makes mistakes – Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, and all the other companies. But Electronic Arts, or EA, seems to get a particularly bad reputation for it, and I don’t really understand why,” Fares explained.
Fares highlighted the strong partnership between Hazelight and EA, noting that, like all publishers, EA isn’t perfect. This relationship has been very successful for Hazelight, as their game, Split Fiction, significantly outperformed EA’s initial sales expectations when it was released last year.
Even if Fares makes good points, Electronic Arts (EA) is facing scrutiny. The potential sale of the company to a group led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has raised worries that EA’s values and the games it makes could change under new ownership.
