According to the director of Hazelight Studios, Josef Fares, the creators behind Split Fiction and It Takes Two, there will be no microtransactions included in their future game titles.
In a conversation with MinnMax, Fares confirmed that Hazelight Studios isn’t open to being purchased by larger publishers. “Hazelight is not up for sale,” Fares clarified. “We will continue doing what we love and are passionate about, and that’s all there is to it.” He also mentioned that the studio won’t go public on the stock market, and they absolutely rule out microtransactions or any unnecessary add-ons; instead, they simply focus on creating games. Period.
More recently, Fares mentioned that Hazelight Studio has no plans for developing live-service games. These types of games often incorporate microtransactions since their creators aim for continuous income streams.
While microtransactions might initially appear attractive due to the continuous flow of fresh content like cosmetics, users have raised valid concerns that these transactions have become excessive, leaving them with a sense of being financially pressed.
Hazelight primarily focuses on developing cooperative video games, and they demonstrate customer-oriented approach by frequently providing a ‘Friend Pass’ feature. This means that only a single player has to buy the game, ‘Split Fiction’, for instance, to allow another friend to join in the gameplay.
Interestingly, it turns out that all of Hazelight Studios’ games thus far have been distributed by Electronic Arts, a company whose CEO foresees artificial intelligence driving the sales of microtransactions. It’s noteworthy that Electronic Arts has previously made billions from microtransactions.
Split Fiction launches on March 6 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
