Despite primarily creating cooperative games, the head of Hazelight Studio, Josef Fares, has hinted that a solo player game isn’t entirely out of the question for them in the future.
Over recent years, Hazelight Studio has captivated gamers globally with their cooperative games. The game A Way Out, centered around an intriguing narrative of two prisoners attempting an escape, was particularly successful.
After that, came It Takes Two, a game that delved into the trials of a pair dealing with relationship issues who were mysteriously transported into a book. This title garnered numerous accolades across various multiplayer genres, ultimately being crowned Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
Indeed, there’s a fresh release that has piqued my interest – Split Fiction! This collaborative adventure immerses us into the tale of two fictional writers, each penning distinct stories.
Josef Fares won’t rule out a new single-player game from Hazelight
There’s been discussion about Hazelight shifting away from their cooperative game format and focusing on creating a standalone title, leveraging their narrative abilities instead. Such a move isn’t definitively off the table according to Josef Fares.
“Hazelight’s first game is actually a single-player game,” Fares told TopMob for Fall Damage.
As a gamer, I’ve come to expect that co-op gameplay will always be a part of Hazelight’s DNA. However, I’m the first to admit that the future is unpredictable. While it might seem unlikely, Hazelight could potentially venture into single-player territory. But rest assured, if they do, it will be in true Hazelight style.

The initial game the Swede mentions is titled “Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons.” Unlike most games where each character is controlled individually, this game allows for a unique experience as a single player manages both main characters simultaneously, rather than using a typical cooperative setup.
Fares refuted the assertion that he declared single-player games as obsolete. “Have I ever stated that single-player is dead? Absolutely not. That’s complete nonsense,” he clarified.
If Split Fiction becomes successful, there’s a possibility that we’ll see another cooperative game from Hazelight Studios. However, be assured that it will not include microtransactions or loot boxes – these elements are disliked by the creators.
