The follow-up to the 1984 comedy ‘This Is Spinal Tap’, titled ‘Spinal Tap II: The Saga Persists’, is set to bring its rock and roll antics to cinemas this autumn.
On September 12, Bleecker Street will debut the U.S. version of a rock comedy sequel in cinemas. This independent studio, established by Andrew Karpen in 2014, has also secured the rights to the original “This Is Spinal Tap,” which underwent restoration and re-screened in movie theaters this summer. Following its theater release, “This Is Spinal Tap” will make its digital and streaming platform debut for the first time in years.
Under the direction of Rob Reiner, “Spinal Tap II: The Final Continuation” features Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer reprising their characters as part of a notoriously loud British band. This time around, the heavy metal group, known for its eccentricities, gets back together after 15 years apart to perform one last concert. The original film’s director, Marty DiBergi, is also back on board, chronicling their tour. Notable musicians like Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood make special appearances in this continuation of the band’s story.
A freshly revealed sneak peek showcases a popular Marshall guitar amplifier being cranked all the way up to an exceptional level, echoing the unique quirk of the band from the original film – where their guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Guest) humorously reveals his amp’s volume not stopping at 10 like usual, but instead reaching 11.
Reiner expressed his delight in collaborating with the dedicated team at Bleecker Street, who are committed to preserving Tap’s memory. He also looks forward to providing another opportunity for Marty DiBergi to regain significance,” stated Reiner.
4 decades ago, “This Is Spinal Tap” initially had a modest run in cinemas. However, its popularity soared after its VHS release, transforming it into a cult classic and paving the way for the mockumentary genre. In 2002, the Library of Congress recognized it as culturally, historically, and aesthetically important, choosing to preserve it in the National Film Registry.
The movie titled ‘Spinal Tap II’ was jointly produced by Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matthew George, and was financed by Castle Rock Entertainment, a company that Reiner co-founded in 1987. During production, Derrick J. Rossi PhD, Hernan Narea, Jonathan Fuhrman, and Christopher H. Warner served as executive producers.
We’re thrilled to collaborate with Rob Reiner and the talented creators of ‘This Is Spinal Tap,’ a film that has deeply impacted countless people,” said Bleecker Street’s CEO, Andrew Karpen, and president, Kent Sanderson. “Beyond being simply a movie, ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ is a cultural milestone that revolutionized the mockumentary genre and made an enduring impression on both film and music. Working on ‘Spinal Tap II’ offers us a unique opportunity to honor its lasting impact while crafting something innovative for fans old and new.
The agreement was facilitated by John Burnham from Atlas Artists, along with Kent Sanderson and Avy Eschenasy from Bleecker Street.
Lately, Bleecker Street has unveiled Mike Leigh’s films “Hard Truths” and “The Return,” starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche respectively. Their upcoming lineup boasts an array of exciting titles: Andrew Ahn is remaking a romantic comedy called “The Wedding Banquet,” starring Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang; there’s also the drama “The Friend” featuring Naomi Watts and Bill Murray; and lastly, the suspenseful thriller “Relay” with Riz Ahmed, Lily James, and Sam Worthington.
