Spilled!, a short, relaxing game about cleaning oil spills, is out now

Today, the tranquil simulation game titled “Spilled!” by developer Lente was launched on Steam. The objective is to clean up polluted water bodies by scooping oil and collecting litter to restore these waterways to their original purity. As you advance in the game, you accrue a currency that can be utilized to enhance your boat’s capabilities, such as a larger scoop for efficient collection of pollutants or a bigger tank to hold collected materials before needing to empty it. Although there is a sense of urgency to protect the environment, “Spilled!” does not impose time constraints or rigid rules on the player’s progression. It is one of the most rewarding games I’ve ever experienced.

Spilled!, an enjoyably short, casual game about cleaning up oil spills, is out now

This recently released indie game, Spilled!, brings to mind one of my top picks from 2023, Terra Nil. Despite different gameplay mechanics, they share the common theme of rejuvenating a natural environment. Similar to Terra Nil, Spilled! grants players the freedom to progress at their own speed. The game is brief, approximately an hour long, with eight levels to complete, and it’s affordably priced at $5.99 on Steam, offering a 10% discount during its first week of release.

Beyond its delightfully laid-back gameplay, Spilled! skillfully employs its vibrant pixel-art design not just for the water but also for the scenic landscapes that surround it. What’s more, as you work to clean up the water, you’ll notice a return of diverse wildlife such as sea turtles and coral reefs teeming with colorful fish.

Lente, a lone game developer, apparently put in a significant amount of time developing their debut game, ‘Spilled!’, while residing on a boat. Lente launched a Kickstarter campaign for ‘Spilled!’ in January 2024, and the project was fully funded within twelve hours of its launch, eventually surpassing its original goal by a factor of three.

The fundraising effort surpassed all its milestones, incorporating a basic narrative and culminating in a “final boss” as the ultimate target. Although I haven’t delved into that aspect just yet (I’m looking forward to it later today since it’s only an hour away), I’m eager to see how a boss battle would materialize within this game, given its potential match with such a concept. As of now, “Spilled!” is available on PC via Steam, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it also made its way onto consoles in the near future, particularly the Nintendo Switch, as it seems tailor-made for handheld gaming.
