The appointment of Spike Lee as the jury president is a masterstroke, as his passion for storytelling and championing new voices in filmmaking will undoubtedly enrich the festival’s atmosphere.

Spike Lee has been chosen as the head of the jury for the fourth installment of the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia.

For our upcoming fourth edition, it’s a privilege to announce that acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee will serve as the president of our jury during this year’s festival, as stated by Jomana Al Rashid, the chairwoman of the Red Sea Film Foundation, in her recent declaration on Thursday.

Spike is a groundbreaking filmmaker whose influential work has left a lasting mark on both films and broader culture,” she went on. “His dynamic, insightful approach and unwavering support for creativity and emerging voices make him an excellent choice to head our jury this year. We’re excited to see him interact with the rising stars in our competition selections.

Spike Lee expressed his excitement for returning as the president of the jury at the Red Sea International Film Festival this year, having previously experienced its extraordinary filmmaking, ambiance, and creativity in 2022. He emphasized the importance of fostering a multicultural gathering that celebrates the art of cinema, while also highlighting the necessity to showcase up-and-coming filmmakers. This year’s competition lineup includes first-time directors from diverse regions such as the Arab world, Asia, and Africa, which he finds thrilling. He is eager to delve into this year’s program and make what promises to be challenging decisions alongside fellow jury members.

The 16-title competition will feature standout movies from the Arab region, Asia and Africa.

The festival will kick off by debuting “The Tale of Daye’s Family,” a musical drama directed by Egyptian filmmaker Karim Shenawy, and conclude with “Better Man,” a profile of the British pop sensation Robbie Williams directed by Michael Gracey, which is being shown as a special event.

Lee will join the “In Conversation” segment of the festival too, along with other well-known figures like Viola Davis, who is being recognized for her accomplishments.

The Fourth Red Sea International Film Festival is set to unfold in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, along the Red Sea’s eastern coastline starting from December 5th, specifically within the historic district of Al Balad.
