‘Spider-Verse’ Producer Chris Miller Denies Report That Sony ‘Scrapped Most’ of Third Film: ‘The Reels Are Coming Along Nicely’

As a long-time fan of the Spider-Man franchise and someone who has seen their fair share of behind-the-scenes dramas, I must admit that the latest news about “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” has left me feeling a bit like Peter Parker trying to juggle too many responsibilities.

Producer Chris Miller says all is well in the Spider-Verse.

On Tuesday, X was addressed by Miller in response to a report from The InSneider regarding potential issues with the third installment of the Academy Award-winning “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” franchise. The newsletter had stated on Monday evening that Sony had made significant changes to the film primarily due to creative concerns, and suggested that it might not be released until as late as 2027.

Miller replied on Twitter, “There’s no abandonment,” he said. “The project is progressing smoothly.” His statement followed shortly after Pemberton, the composer of ‘Spider-Verse’, also disputed the report, posting on X, ” frankly, I try not to comment on such matters, but have you ever considered that some information found online might not always be entirely accurate?

As the narrative of InSneider unfolds, it was revealed that the team behind “Beyond the Spider-Verse” initially found the shift in direction surprising. However, I’ve heard whispers that they are now pleased with the extra time given to them for the sequel production. It seems crucial to everyone involved in this Oscar-winning franchise that they deliver a satisfying conclusion.

In June, it was reported by Vulture that allegations were made about excessive and unsustainable work conditions during the production of the second film in the franchise titled “Across the Spider-Verse.” The report suggested that around 100 artists quit the project due to long workdays of up to 11 hours, seven days a week.

Amy Pascal, a producer of franchises, expressed to Vulture about the claims, “One great aspect of animation is that you can continue working on it until the story feels just right.” To those animators who felt disheartened by having to revise final renders five times consecutively, she responded, “Well, I suppose that’s just part and parcel of filmmaking.

Initially scheduled to premiere on March 29, 2024, “Beyond the Spider-Verse” was subsequently taken off Sony’s release schedule in July 2023. A Sony insider revealed back then that the delay was due to delays in voice recording caused by the SAG-AFTRA strike.

No new release date has been announced.

Miller and Pemberton’s representatives didn’t give an immediate response to my request for a statement.
