Spider-Punk Movie Script Nears Completion, Promising Update On Spinoff

There’s good news about the upcoming Spider-Punk movie, a spin-off from the popular Spider-Verse films. Announced back in August, the movie will focus on the Spider-Punk character, who was voiced by Daniel Kaluuya in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Kaluuya is also co-writing the script with Ajon Singh.

Daniel Kaluuya recently told Deadline at the Red Sea Film Festival that he and Dev Patel are nearly finished with the first draft of their Spider-Punk movie. He described them as currently “in the process” of development. When asked about the story and whether it would connect to the existing Spider-Verse films, Kaluuya simply said details are still to be determined.

Daniel Kaluuya said the incredibly positive reaction to his character, Spider-Punk, in Across the Spider-Verse is why Spider-Punk is getting his own movie. He also praised Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the creators of Spider-Verse, calling them fantastic storytellers and collaborators who continue to influence his work on the Spider-Punk project.

Spider-Punk is a different take on the character Hobie Brown, who is also known as Spider-Man. He’s a key player in the movie Across the Spider-Verse and will be back for Beyond the Spider-Verse, currently scheduled to come out in theaters on June 18, 2027, after a few delays.

Daniel Kaluuya says the Black Panther spinoff is nearing completion of its first draft and has been progressing well since it was announced last August. However, it will probably be a few years before the movie is released.

Keep in mind this is just a first draft, and animated movies take a significant amount of time to create. The Spider-Verse films illustrate this—Into the Spider-Verse was released in 2018, Across the Spider-Verse in 2023, and Beyond the Spider-Verse isn’t expected until 2027.

As Daniel Kaluuya pointed out, Spider-Punk quickly became a fan favorite in Across the Spider-Verse, even with so many characters. The upcoming sequel will not only continue his story, but could also lay the groundwork for a future spin-off series focused on him.

Besides the new Spider-Verse films featuring Daniel Kaluuya, Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in theaters on July 31, 2026. Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and he’ll be joined by Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/the Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/the Hulk, and Sadie Sink, whose character is currently a secret.
