The initial trailer for the Spider-Noir series subtly hints at a scary element that many viewers didn’t notice, suggesting Nicolas Cage‘s Spider-Man will face some serious challenges.
The new Prime Video series, Spider-Noir, takes the Spider-Verse concept and reimagines it as a live-action detective story. Set in 1930s New York, the show follows Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), a private investigator who also has spider-like abilities.
The streamer has been secretive about Spider-Noir, but details are now emerging: the story follows Reilly as he tries to figure out who is repeatedly trying to kill gangster Silvermane, played by Brendan Gleeson.
Okay, so the first trailer for the show dropped, and it gave us a really good look at what’s coming. But honestly, a lot of people missed this creepy horror element hidden in the footage. It totally suggests things are about to get seriously strange in this live-action Spider-Man series – way weirder than I expected!
Spider-Noir is going to have a body-horror element to Ben Reilly’s story

The new trailer sets the scene in the 1930s and hints at a disturbing twist to Ben Reilly’s Spider-Noir storyline. It seems Reilly will be battling a physical and mental struggle, as he narrates, “I manage to suppress my tics, thoughts, and impulses… most of the time.”
Okay, I was rewatching the trailer, and there’s this one frame – you seriously almost miss it – but you can see Nicolas Cage’s character actually turning into some kind of spider-human hybrid! I’m talking extra eyes, extra legs… it’s genuinely creepy. It reminded me instantly of those classic body horror movies like The Fly or The Thing, or even something like Slither. It looks seriously unsettling and I’m here for it!
If the character appearing is truly Man-Spider, and not a different spider-themed being like the Spider-God Anansi, this would be his first live-action appearance. However, the idea of Peter Parker becoming Man-Spider isn’t new to Spider-Man’s history – it’s happened in the comics before.
The idea of a ‘Man-Spider’ – or a hero transforming into a spider-like creature – usually appears in comics and cartoons when the character is having trouble managing their secret and heroic lives, or after being changed by an enemy. Many fans immediately think of the ‘Neogenic Nightmare’ storyline from the second season of the 1990s animated series.
As the story unfolds, Peter loses control of his powers and unexpectedly develops four additional arms. This rapid change transforms him into the Man-Spider. Fortunately, he’s rescued by the Punisher and Kraven the Hunter just before Dr. Curt Connors can find a way to restore him to normal.

Shortly before the trailer came out, producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller shared that Nicolas Cage had a very unusual take on his role. He described his performance as portraying a spider pretending to be a human, essentially switching between his human exterior and the animalistic feeling within. And the trailer certainly shows that animalistic side!
Prime Video could easily portray Spider-Noir as a typical 1930s detective story, with Reilly simply being a hero in his spare time. However, the show seems to be aiming for a much more intense and gritty take on the character.
Spider-Man villains also get horrific scenes in Spider-Noir

Reilly isn’t the only one going through changes. One of the attackers targeting Silvermane seems to have the power to create fire, and it’s likely they are the villain known as Molten Man.
A new, intriguing image reveals a hand crackling with electricity, suggesting that a character with electrical powers from the 1930s will soon appear.
We also get a quick glimpse of Jack Huston as Flint Marko, the character known to fans as Sandman, with sand already visibly forming on his face. This suggests Spider-Noir is embracing a darker, more unsettling take on the Spider-Man story.
