After 46 years of designing Hello Kitty and helping to make her a worldwide favorite, Yuko Yamaguchi will retire from her creative role in 2026.
Sanrio, the company famous for Hello Kitty, recently announced that Yamaguchi is retiring as the character’s designer. They described it as passing the role from one designer to the next, marking a change to the fourth generation of Hello Kitty creators.
Yuko Yamaguchi has been designing Hello Kitty since 1980, and has been key in keeping the beloved character popular with both kids and adults over the years.
Hello Kitty will get a new designer in 2026
Sanrio announced that the new lead designer, who will be known as “Aya,” has long worked with Hello Kitty and supported the previous designer, Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi will continue to help guide the brand in an advisory position.
I remember first seeing Hello Kitty way back in ’74 – Sanrio made her, and she blew up to become a total icon, you know? Seriously, everyone recognizes that little cat now!
