Spider-Man’s Identity Change In Prime Video’s Live-Action Show May Have Deeper Meaning Than You Think

The new Spider-Man series on Prime Video might be hinting at a bigger story. Instead of using the classic name for Nicolas Cage’s character, the show has chosen “Ben Reilly” for its version of the web-slinging hero, which could have a hidden meaning.

Since this show takes place in a different universe, Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man doesn’t need to be anyone other than Peter Parker, even if his story is quite different. This is because the comic book character he’s inspired by, Spider-Man Noir, is also named Peter Parker.

Spider-Noir’s Ben Reilly May Be A Peter Parker Clone

This understandably makes people wonder why Peter Parker’s identity was dropped. According to Spider-Noir showrunner Oren Uziel, one reason was to clearly distinguish Cage’s character from Peter, as they come from very different worlds and have distinct personalities.

Uziel also pointed out there’s a specific reason the name “Ben Reilly” was chosen, suggesting a potentially heartbreaking revelation about the main character’s past. This also implies that he’s more than just someone named Ben Reilly. At its core, the Ben Reilly character in the comics is a clone of Peter Parker, and the show might be heading in the same direction.

The trailer for Spider-Noir features a strange, bald man who strongly resembles Nicolas Cage. Next to him, we see what look like spider legs, suggesting they might be part of his body. This could be a hint at the cloning storyline from Marvel Comics, which created the character Ben Reilly, also known as Scarlet Spider.

Dr. Miles Warren, a troubled scientist and professor, harbored secret feelings for Gwen Stacy. Her death deeply affected him, leading him to become The Jackal. As The Jackal, he created duplicates of both Gwen and Peter Parker. While most of these clones didn’t survive, one clone of Peter Parker lived and went on to become a hero himself.

Spider-Noir might finally reveal the origin story of the Scarlet Spider in live-action, through flashbacks related to Cage’s character – but the story will unfold within the dark and gritty setting of the Noir universe.

This storyline would fit well with the show’s already dark and gritty tone, exploring the difficult experience of someone living another person’s life. If this happens, the Spider-Man Noir series could be the first live-action Spider-Man adaptation to feature the well-known Clone Saga storyline.
