The newest trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day showed a different side of Zendaya’s character, MJ, and it seems we’ll finally see a more accurate portrayal of the classic MJ within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth Spider-Man movie in the MCU, is scheduled to come out on July 31, 2026, but details about the plot are still unknown.
The trailer released on June 17th offered a first look at exciting new elements, including Mark Ruffalo reprising his roles as both Bruce Banner and the Hulk. It also showcased scenes featuring Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle and Michael Mando as Scorpion, and gave a better idea of what Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is up to now that the world has forgotten him.
Four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker is once again secretly protecting New York City as a superhero, similar to how he operated before anyone knew his identity. Because Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya) don’t remember Peter Parker as Spider-Man, their lives have changed, particularly for MJ.
In the trailer, Peter is shocked to see his ex-girlfriend, who doesn’t recognize him – she appears happily paired with a new partner played by Eman Esfandi (known for his role in Ahsoka). This is painful for Peter, but he anticipated it, having previously asked Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to make everyone forget he ever existed.
As a big movie fan, I’m finding this storyline really interesting! It feels like they’re giving MJ a fresh start, almost rewriting parts of her backstory. It’s a classic move you see a lot in superhero comics – a character ‘retcon,’ where they change things to make them fit better with the source material. And it seems like Brand New Day is doing just that with MJ, bringing her personality a little closer to how she is in the comics.
The MJ In Spider-Man: Brand New Day Will Be Closer To Her Comic Counterpart
With MJ now dating someone else and Peter seemingly rejected, we’re finally seeing a romance between them that’s true to the original comics. In those stories, MJ is the girl Peter admires from afar, someone he finds beautiful but struggles to express his feelings to.
As a big movie fan, I’m really interested to see how they handle MJ in the new film! It looks like they’re going back to her comic book roots after giving her a pretty different personality in the last three movies. In those films, she wasn’t just waiting to be rescued – she was much more independent and even a little bit of a loner. From what I understand, this next movie might change that and bring her closer to the classic MJ we all remember.
There Was Never Going To Be Another MJ
When Zendaya was first cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming, some fans wondered if she’d actually be playing the character of MJ. However, in the movie, she is MJ – though her full name is Michelle Jones-Watson, she’s definitely the MJ everyone knows from the comics.
Look, as a big fan, I kept hearing theories about the original MJ showing up in the Spider-Man movies. But honestly, it’s pretty clear now that Zendaya is our MJ in the MCU. I’m excited to see what Spider-Man: Brand New Day brings for her character, and I’m so glad she’s staying on as MJ – she’s perfect for the role!
