Mountaintop Studios, the creators of Spectre Divide, have declared that their free-to-play game will be closing down mere six months following its debut. Despite garnering generally favorable reviews upon launch, the studio attributes the game’s closure to a decrease in player engagement and insufficient finances.
Nate Mitchell, CEO of the studio, shared that they thoroughly investigated every potential path to sustain the developer and their game, Spectre Divide. Unfortunately, after exhausting all available solutions, it became clear that Spectre Divide and its team were facing an unfortunate outcome. “The current state of the industry is challenging,” Mitchell noted.

As a gamer eagerly diving into Spectre, I was initially thrilled by the massive 400,000 players who joined the game during the first week, reaching a staggering 10,000 concurrent players across all platforms. However, Mitchell shared in a Steam Blog post that as days passed, the number of active players and income didn’t meet the requirements to cover Spectre’s daily expenses and the studio’s operations.
Since its PC launch, the team at Mountaintop has been tirelessly stretching our remaining resources, but alas, we’ve depleted our funding to sustain the game. This unfortunate reality means that Mountaintop will be shutting down at the end of this week.
It seems that live-action games are currently finding it challenging to maintain their position. Even though heavyweights such as Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone continue to hold substantial player bases, the past few years have witnessed numerous live-service projects struggling to sustain the initial enthusiasm they generated.
Sony’s Concord proved to be a costly misstep for the company, causing several other live-service ventures to be shelved. The game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League also failed to gain traction, joining the ranks of titles such as Redfall, Anthem, and Marvel’s Avengers that have been essentially canceled following Rocksteady’s announcement that further development on it would cease.
