Sparg0 stuns Smash Ultimate community by using low-tier Piranha Plant to win tournament

FaZe Sparg0 solidifies his status as one of the top Smash players ever, defeating MkLeo and Sonix using Piranha Plant to capture the championship at Blink Respawn 2025.

The Blink Respawn tournament wrapped up in the Dominican Republic on July 20th, showcasing a prestigious final four: Sparg0, renowned for his skills as the world’s best Sonic player, Sonix, the highest-ranking Pikachu (Shinymark), and MkLeo, who is commonly referred to as “the Goat.

Sparg0 often switches between various characters, but he’s most recognized as a specialist with Cloud. However, he also excels in using Aegis, Corrin, and Roy, particularly when facing specific opponents.

In recent times, a fighter who’s been showing remarkable improvement is Piranha Plant, one of Smash Ultimate’s relatively new characters. Notably, the renowned player Sparg0 wrote another success story as he managed to defeat some top-ranking players using this seemingly disadvantaged character.

This was followed by consecutive wins against longtime rival Sonix, both sets ending in scores of 3-1 and 3-2. Ultimately, this series of victories earned the legend the tournament championship.

The Plant pick threw his rival and seemingly everyone else for a loop.

As Sonix, who just lost to Piranha Plant in the Winner’s Finals, I find myself yearning for a comprehensive guide to conquer this formidable opponent. In my previous encounters with this character, I must admit that I was utterly perplexed by the situation. This is my first time facing him in a bracket, and I am eager to learn the strategies needed to claim victory over Piranha Plant.

Apart from Sonix, even Sparg0 was taken aback. In fact, he admitted that he hadn’t anticipated just how far he could take the game’s inaugural DLC fighter.

I emerged victorious in two matches against Mkleo (Byleth) and Sonix in DR using plant, with Blink Respawn as the tournament. I’m still amazed that I managed to bring this character to such high levels, but playing your favorite character, regardless of its tier, can definitely yield impressive results. I’m thrilled about it!

He was surprised and thrilled because he didn’t expect to reach such heights with Plant, but playing a favorite character, no matter its tier, has incredible effects. He’s eager to discover how far he can push Plant even more!

As a devoted fan, I’m always on edge when it comes to Sparg0’s choice of characters, given that Cloud has been instrumental in establishing him as one of Smash’s elite players. Yet, his recent victories with Plant, a character often overlooked due to being near the bottom of the tier list, are a testament to his exceptional skill and adaptability.
