Film Movement has secured the rights to distribute Pedro Martin-Calero’s chilling horror debut film, “The Wailing” (“El llanto”), which garnered attention during its initial screening at the 2019 San Sebastian Film Festival.
The announcement was issued by Michael Rosenberg, President of Film Movement, and Vicente Canales, Managing Director of Film Factory Entertainment, who is responsible for selling the film.
The movie, jointly produced by Spain and Argentina, brought Martin-Calero the Silver Shell award for Best Director at San Sebastián and was nominated for the Spanish Academy Goya Award in the category of Best New Director. Scheduled for a theater release in 2025, it will later be available for streaming and home viewing.
In the movie, three different women from distinct eras and far-off locations are all haunted by an intangible, spectral menace that no one can clearly perceive. This elusive entity appears more like a play of light rather than something tangible. Whenever these women try to face this presence, they hear a chilling, dreadful shriek.
As a movie enthusiast, I had the pleasure of watching “The Wailing,” a chilling masterpiece penned by the brilliant minds of Martin-Calero and Isabel Peña. Peña, known for her work with Rodrigo Sorogoyen, has proven herself to be an exceptional writer time and again. This film was brought to life by the dynamic Madrid label Caballo Films, a production company that has backed several projects by their partner Sorogoyen, including “The Beasts,” a film co-written by Peña, which won the prestigious Spanish Academy Goya award for best picture in 2023 and was also recognized with a French Cesar for best foreign film.
I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing a film that has left critics in Spain and beyond spellbound with its unconventional storyline. Film Movement’s Rosenberg expresses his admiration for this latest acquisition, stating, “Pedro masterfully flips the horror genre upside down, crafting an entirely original, thought-provoking piece that resonates deeply. The captivating performances of the female leads and the unexpected plot twists make ‘The Wailing’ a film that will linger in the minds of North American audiences long after they leave the theater.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that among other acquisitions, Film Movement has added some intriguing international films to their collection. Among them are Sean Devlin’s “Asog,” Sook-Yin Lee’s “Paying for It,” and the debut of “Julie Keeps Quiet.” These films made their premiere at Cannes, a testament to their quality and potential.
