Spaceballs 2 already has the perfect title thanks to Mel Brooks’ Yogurt

The highly anticipated second installment of Spaceballs is gearing up for an over-the-top journey. After years of anticipation, the sequel to Mel Brooks‘ 1987 cult favorite is moving forward – and it has already secured its fitting title, thanks to Yogurt himself.

Initially, when Spaceballs debuted in movie theaters, it received a combination of positive and negative reviews from critics. However, over time, due to its satirical take on films like Star Wars, Star Trek, and all space-themed tropes, it has become known as a symbol of sci-fi wit and humor.

As a gamer, I’d say: In this version, Bill Pullman steps into the boots of a humorous Han Solo doppelganger named Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga takes on the role of the witty Princess Leia stand-in, Princess Vespa, and Rick Moranis brings his charm to a tongue-twister character who’s both Darth Vader and Dark Helmet.

Brooks, in addition to serving as the director, also played the roles of President Skroob and Yogurt. Despite recently turning 99 years old, he’ll be reprising his role as the golden Yoda for Spaceballs 2. He is also the one who came up with the movie’s title.

Spaceballs 2 needs to be subtitled The Search for More Money

Since the sequel has officially been announced, it seems like an opportunity missed by the creators if they don’t title it “Spaceballs 2: The Quest for More Cash”.

In the memorable moment from the initial movie, it was Yogurt who first spoke the line. This occurred after he had assisted both Lone Starr and Barf (played by John Candy). When the situation calmed down a bit, Lone Starr inquired, “Might we cross paths with you again?

Yogurt responds, “Perhaps someday, with a little luck, we’ll reunite in Spaceballs 2: The Quest for More Wealth.

This movie is an outstanding illustration of numerous satirical jabs at Hollywood’s repeated focus on sequels and commercial tie-ins in comedy films, criticizing the money-making apparatus driving genre production.

The new title fits perfectly since the sequel has been announced. Instead of merely poking fun at the original machine, it will also make fun of itself. This self-mockery is precisely what made “Spaceballs” successful back then.

Numerous supporters share the sentiment, as one put it about the announcement, “It should definitely be titled Spaceballs 2: The Hunt for More Riches.” Another exclaimed, “If they don’t name it Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, then what’s the purpose of it?

A third individual chimed in, “Unless it’s titled ‘Spaceballs 2: The Quest for More Wealth’, it would be a complete disaster.

What we know so far

In simpler terms, it was revealed by Amazon’s MGM Studios that they are making another movie, scheduled for release in 2027, and their introductory text made light-hearted jokes about the expanding universe of sequels in film production.

In the upcoming project, Brooks will once again play the character Yogurt. However, instead of Brooks, it’s director Josh Greenbaum who will helm the film this time around. The script for this production is penned by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad.

In addition, Pullman and Moranis are set to reprise their roles from before, while Keke Palmer is set to make her debut in the Spaceballs 2 cast as a fresh face.

Additionally, it’s been reported that Lewis Pullman, son of author Philip Pullman, who is known for his role in Thunderbolts, is expected to appear in the upcoming film as well. However, specifics regarding his character have yet to be disclosed.

Brooks also shared the teaser on X/Twitter, writing, “I told you we’d be back.”

Despite the specifics of the plot remaining undisclosed, it’s clear that there will be an abundance of witty remarks related to meta elements, given the sequel’s rich source material for satire.

Thirty-eight years back, there existed just a single Star Wars trilogy – that’s what the opening crawl teaser trailer reminds us.

However, since then there have been various additions to the saga, including a trilogy that precedes the original, another trilogy that follows it, a film that continues the story of the first trilogy, another that sets events before the second trilogy, numerous television series spin-offs, and even a movie based on one of those TV spin-offs, which acts as both a prequel and a sequel.

Without further ado, let’s delve into a list that includes: two sandy wonders known as Dunes, seven Jurassic Parks, five versions of Avatar (two original and three more to come), 36 Marvel Cinematic Universe films featuring two distinct Robert Downey Jrs., two separate DC Universe attempts, an animated Lion King, its live-action counterpart, a prequel to the live-action Lion King, eight Harry Potter movies, a TV series replicating the same storyline, an entire Star Trek streaming service, seven Alien films (two of which are also Predator films, not to be confused with the six Predator films that aren’t Alien films), one Prometheus (a film that shares some similarities with the Alien series), four Beatles movies, and finally, Oppenheimer.

“But in 38 years there has only ever been one SPACEBALLS. Until now… “
