For quite some time now, “South Park” has been a popular choice for viewers on the streaming service, Max. This series is among the most-watched programs on the platform. However, with recent movies being distributed elsewhere, it’s become clear that South Park will depart from Max and settle into its new home on Paramount+. The current agreement between South Park and Max ends on June 30, 2025. On July 1, it appears “South Park” will establish its new residence at Paramount+.
Is it important to consider if this move is a good one for South Park? Perhaps not, as the show seems destined for success no matter where it lands. However, there might be some concern about the level of censorship on Paramount+ compared to other streaming platforms, as humorously depicted in Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal. Although it’s not certain, South Park could face some edits to fit its new home. Recently, there have been rumors that Max might find a way to bring South Park to Paramount+; however, this is yet to be verified. This leaves fans with just a few weeks to watch these episodes before they potentially undergo changes or even get taken off Paramount+.
Max Has Already Banned Some ‘South Park’ Episodes
South Park often finds itself at the center of debates, and sometimes shows face restrictions or immediate censorship upon release due to shifting opinions about certain topics or immediate backlash. Notably, an episode titled “Super Best Friends,” which depicted a religious figure, was instantly censored in 2001 following death threats if it were aired uncensored. This trend continued with other similar episodes, and as a result, they remain banned or censored on Max.
- Season 5, Episode 3: “Super Best Friends”
- Season 10, Episode 3: “Cartoon Wars Part I”
- Season 10, Episode 4: “Cartoon Wars Part II”
- Season 14, Episode 5: “200”
- Season 14, Episode 6: “201”
Since various versions have been previously edited due to censorship worldwide, it’s worth noting that there isn’t really an unedited version available. Now, Paramount+ might even contemplate editing or prohibiting more episodes in the future.
Paramount+ May Ban or Censor 17 Episodes of ‘South Park’
Reports suggest that Paramount+ may take action to suppress or edit 17 episodes of South Park. However, it’s yet to be verified whether any specific content or episodes will actually be eliminated. The list, which encompasses previously censored titles, is as follows:
- Season 1, Episode 4: “Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride”
- Season 2, Episode 1: “Terrance and Phillip in Not Without My Anus”
- Season 4, Episode 14: “Pip”
- Season 5, Episode 3: “Super Best Friends”
- Season 6, Episode 2: “Jared Has Aides”
- Season 6, Episode 7: “Simpsons Already Did It”
- Season 7, Episode 1: “Cancelled”
- Season 8, Episode 3: “Passion of the Jew”
- Season 8, Episode 4: “You Got F’d in the A”
- Season 9, Episode 8: “Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow”
- Season 9, Episode 12: “Trapped in the Closet”
- Season 10, Episode 3: “Cartoon Wars Part I”
- Season 10, Episode 4: “Cartoon Wars Part II”
- Season 14, Episode 5: “200”
- Season 14, Episode 6: “201”
- Season 16, Episode 4: “Jewpacabra”
- Season 17, Episode 6: “Ginger Cow”
The term “Canceled” seems quite unusual, but it pokes fun at the trend of cancelling TV shows due to sensitive content in today’s controversial environment. Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker humorously tackled censorship from a moral perspective during the (aptly titled) “Cartoon Wars” storyline, which suggested that removing content from one show (like Family Guy) could lead to more censorship and giving in to pressure groups rather than promoting free expression.
It’s clear that many South Park fans are unhappy about potential censorship on Paramount+, regardless if a lot or a little is edited out. Even though all episodes might stay unchanged when the series moves to its new streaming home, it’s important for fans to watch and save the previous episodes of South Park on Max before June 30 to fully enjoy the uncensored version.
