South Korean Animation ‘The Square’ to Close Far East Film Festival – Global Bulletin

FESTIVAL FINALE

The South Korean animated romance titled “The Square” will be the closing film for the 27th Far East Film Festival (FEFF) held in Udine, Italy. This movie will have its first appearance on the world stage during the festival, which takes place from April 24 to May 2. Sharing the limelight on the closing night is “Ya Boy Kongming! The Movie,” a live-action adaptation of a well-known comedy manga, which will be screened out of competition.

Two more unique screenings have been scheduled: a rejuvenated edition of the scarcely found 1979 Hong Kong cult movie “The System,” and the Indonesian horror film “Madness of Madness” that delves into the crossroads where fear, politics, and societal issues collide.

These new inclusions raise FEFF’s count to 77 movies hailing from 12 different nations, with 49 of them vying for awards. The festival now showcases 8 world debuts, 16 international premieres, 20 European first-time screenings, and 19 Italian premieres.

JURY JUNCTION

At the upcoming 72nd edition of the Sydney Film Festival, which runs from June 4th to the 15th, the jury for the official competition has been announced. The winners will receive the Sydney Film Prize, a cash award of AUD60,000 ($36,000), at the closing night gala on June 15th at the State Theatre. This prize is given to films that exhibit bravery, innovation, and daring in the world of cinema.

The Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel (“Snowtown,” “Nitram”) will preside over the jury. His debut documentary titled “Ellis Park” will be screened out of competition. Accompanying him are Melita Toscan du Plantier, the director and producer of Marrakech International Film Festival, the New Zealand-based director-actor Rachel House, the Hong Kong producer-distributor Winnie Tsang, and Kamilaroi writer-actor Thomas Weatherall.

Nashen Moodley, the Sydney Film Festival director, stated that the Sydney Film Prize recognizes daring and innovative filmmaking which pushes the boundaries of cinematic language. He added that each juror possesses a rich knowledge of storytelling, gained from their individual remarkable creative endeavors and cultural backgrounds. Moodley expressed his delight in having Justin Kurzel as jury president, whose robust and compelling filmography qualifies him perfectly to spearhead this discussion.

At the Festival Hub next year, Kurzel is set to present the 2025 Ian McPherson Memorial Lecture, where he’ll talk about his professional journey alongside Moodley.

The competition accredited by FIAPF will display a selection of 12 films from around the world, and we’ll unveil the complete list on May 7th.
