Sounds Like Working With 28 Years Later’s Alpha Actor And His ‘Big Swinging Dong’ Was As Hilariously Awkward As You’d Think, At Least For Some Crew Members

Caution: Some spoilers ahead for those who haven’t seen 28 Years Later, so tread carefully!

As a die-hard cinema lover, I can’t help but express my excitement for Danny Boyle’s upcoming release, “28 Years Later.” This movie has been generating quite a buzz, and it’s not just because of Jack O’Connell’s electrifying late-stage appearance as Sir Jimmy Crystal. However, before the madness of the cult sets in, viewers are in for a treat with some unexpected full-frontal male nudity courtesy of the colossal Alpha named Samson. Now, I should clarify that it’s not his actual body we’re seeing, but let’s just say the prosthetic representation of his anger-fueled creature has been causing quite a stir among fans. They can’t seem to get enough of that swinging prop penis!

In the upcoming sequel scripted by Alex Garland, it seems that Chi-Lewis Parry’s character, much like Alpha, might be too conscious of the attention his prominent physical attribute is receiving in the production. During an interview with GQ, he discussed his initial response to wearing that specific costume piece and whether he anticipated excessive reactions. According to the actor, this was indeed one of his considerations.

I can’t say for certain, but I believe there was a moment when I was taken aback by it, and that would have been when I first encountered it… We performed a makeup trial without it. However, the first time I remember actually seeing it clearly would have been during application. And you exclaimed, “Wow! That’s a lot! I can only imagine how noticeable it will be while out and about.

To be honest, there were instances in the film where it wouldn’t have been entirely unexpected if Samson’s character’s appendage sprouted limbs and broke free on its own. The rage virus certainly has a knack for being quite erratic.

During that time, Parry probably wasn’t aware that his artificial appendage would spark so many discussions and comments among fans. However, he soon discovered just how captivating the prosthetic was, a fact made clear by those who worked alongside him – or “them,” as one might say. In his own words:

As a film critic stepping onto sets, I often found myself a mystery to many crew members who had only seen me in costume. Week after week, fresh faces would join the team, their reactions ranged from awe-struck surprise to sheer bewilderment. It was always fun to lighten the atmosphere with a bit of playful banter, so I’d tease them good-naturedly. “Where were your eyes just then?” became my catchphrase, a way to break the ice and keep things lively on set.

It’s wonderful that Chi-Lewis Parry maintained a lighthearted approach despite the intense focus he likely faced, as this level of continuous scrutiny could have easily served as a significant hindrance for many other actors. (Plus, avoiding the sensation of it bumping against their knees wouldn’t have been easy either.)

As a film enthusiast, I can assure you that “28 Years Later” offers a lot more for horror aficionados beyond mere nudity – delve into our review to find out more. Parry pointed out that once the initial shock and curiosity subsided, breathing life into Samson required much more than focusing on his physical attributes. According to the actor:

It’s completed, and everyone is aware, yes, okay, interestingly enough, there’s this massive phallic symbol floating everywhere. To put it frankly, while I was deeply immersed in that character, I wasn’t consciously considering it. That colossal pendulum, you could say, was an unintended consequence of Samson.

The Bone Temple,” will receive as much focus for its explicit male anatomy on screen. However, with a minor adjustment, it could certainly capture my attention in that regard. We’ll see when the sequel is scheduled for release in 2026, on January 16.
