After playing in theaters, the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie from Sony Pictures will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix. This is according to a new agreement between Netflix and Sony Pictures.
Netflix and Sony have reached a multi-year agreement where Netflix will be the first streaming service to show Sony films after they’re released in theaters. Netflix specifically highlighted the upcoming live-action Zelda movie as one of the first Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) films coming to the platform, along with titles like The Nightingale, Buds, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and new movies about The Beatles directed by Sam Mendes.
According to Deadline, Sony also explored a potential deal with Amazon, but Netflix ultimately made the more compelling offer. While the deal is reported to be worth $7 billion, neither Netflix nor Sony has officially confirmed the amount.
The upcoming Zelda movie stars Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. They are currently filming in New Zealand.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of many classic Nintendo games like Zelda, is helping produce the upcoming Zelda movie. He’s working with experienced film producer Avi Arad, known for his work with Marvel. Wes Ball, who directed the Maze Runner films, is directing the movie, and Derek Connolly—who has written for franchises like Star Wars, Jurassic World, and Pokemon—is writing the script.
Despite rumors, Nintendo’s next film won’t be based on Zelda. Following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, they’re working with Illumination again on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, planned for release in 2026. A Zelda movie is then scheduled for 2027, and Nintendo intends to continue making movies consistently after that.
