At CES 2025, one fascinating exhibit catching people’s attention is an experimental entertainment concept by Sony, best known for PlayStation. They are giving us a sneak peek into what future gaming spaces might resemble, offering an almost real-life simulation of the Star Trek holodeck.

As Sony explains, the Future Immersive Entertainment Concept integrates Crystal LED screens, sound, tactile feedback, scents, and ambiance with a game similar to The Last of Us, resulting in an immersive interactive experience. It might be likened to a heightened 4D version of Duck Hunt, but instead of shooting ducks, you’re battling mutated humans infected by a fictional fungus – and let’s just say we hope the game developers find a way to make the rotting mushroom-monsters smell more pleasant in this post-apocalyptic setting.

As a dedicated fan, I can confidently say that this visual leap into that grim realm is truly authentic, all thanks to the remarkably lifelike graphics. It’s not my first rodeo when it comes to Sony unveiling innovative gaming hardware; they gave us a sneak peek of an advanced PlayStation controller in a promotional video way back in May 2024. This high-tech controller was a clear departure from the traditional DualSense design, hinting at a revolutionary change.

In more updates about The Last of Us, this week saw the unveiling of a fresh teaser trailer for the second season of the HBO live-action adaptation based on the game. Additionally, it was confirmed that the series will be airing in April 2025. Meanwhile, developers Naughty Dog have hinted at future installments in the game series with The Last of Us Part 3, and are currently engaged in creating a science fiction title called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
