Sony Takes A $204 Million Hit As Destiny 2 Falls Short Of Expectations

Sony has admitted that Destiny 2 hasn’t performed as well as they hoped, leading to a roughly $204 million loss related to its investment in the game’s developer, Bungie. During a recent financial report, Sony explained that player activity and sales for the popular game have been lower than expected since acquiring Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022.

Destiny 2 hasn’t performed as well as we’d hoped since we bought Bungie, partly because the competitive gaming landscape has shifted, explained CFO Lin Tao (as reported by The Game Post).

Sony has lowered its financial expectations for Bungie and written down the value of some of its assets related to the studio. This includes a ¥31.5 billion ($204 million) impairment and an additional ¥18.3 billion ($118 million) in costs related to correcting development estimates. According to Tao, these changes were made because the game isn’t performing as well as expected, due to fewer players and increased competition.

When questioned about the possibility of additional asset write-downs, Tao explained that the value assigned to the Bungie acquisition – known as goodwill – is still considered stable.

Okay, so basically, Sony took a hit on some of the things they bought from Bungie – things like licenses and intellectual property. It’s an accounting thing, but it means those assets aren’t worth as much on paper as they thought. The good news is the overall Destiny franchise is still doing okay, so they didn’t have to write down the value of the Bungie acquisition itself. Apparently, Destiny 2 hasn’t performed as well as Sony hoped since they bought Bungie. And honestly, I’m a little worried because they said both Destiny 2 and the new Marathon game need to hit certain goals, or they could face more of these write-downs in the future. As a fan, I really hope both games can deliver!

Sony CFO Lin Tao says that Marathon is still scheduled to launch by the end of March 2026!

As a long-time Destiny 2 player, it’s a little worrying to see the game struggling right now. It feels like player numbers are really down – even lower than when the Curse of Osiris expansion first came out a few years ago! A lot of us are frustrated with the lack of updates and some of the recent changes to how the game plays. Thankfully, Bungie has said they’re listening and are promising to be more open with us about what’s going on, and that they’re working on both fixing things right now and planning for the future of the game.

The studio hopes its upcoming expansion, Renegades, releasing on December 2, 2025, will bring players back to the game. However, Sony is currently taking a more careful approach with this formerly popular shooting game.
