Sony sued for overpricing games on PlayStation Store

The Dutch foundation Massaschade & Consument, focused on consumer rights, has filed a lawsuit against Sony Corporation.

In the court case, it’s alleged that Sony artificially increased the costs of digital game titles available for purchase on the PlayStation Store.

  1. Everything comes down to the fact that digital versions of PlayStation console games can only be purchased through the PS Store. For Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles, you can purchase codes from other stores to unlock a specific game in the Nintendo eShop and Microsoft Store. Such an option doesn’t exist for the Sony platform.
  2. It’s worth noting that for a long time, the sale of codes for games on the PlayStation Store was allowed. Sony removed such an option in 2019.

Massaschade & Consument’s legal team contends that this approach enables Sony to overstate the prices of video games, leading to an average 47% price hike for digital copies on the PlayStation Store compared to physical editions. This substantial disparity highlights the potential financial loss experienced by consumers due to Sony’s business practices.

Massaschade & Consumer encourages Dutch players to join this lawsuit.

It’s important to note that Sony isn’t just facing this issue alone – there are also similar lawsuits that have been initiated in the United Kingdom and Portugal.
