Sony Reportedly Developing A PS5 Portable System

As a seasoned gamer who has seen the rise and fall of numerous handheld consoles, I must say that the rumors of a potential PlayStation Portable successor have me both excited and cautiously optimistic. The idea of having a portable PS5 is tantalizing, but my past experiences with similar devices leave me wondering if this will be more than just another flash in the pan.

It appears that Sony might be creating a follow-up device to the PlayStation Portable and PS Vita, which could potentially be likened to a portable version of the PS5. This handheld console seems destined for competition with Nintendo’s rumored Switch 2 and Valve’s Steam Deck in the gaming market.

As reported by Bloomberg, it appears that the portable version of the PS5 might not release for several years, or even be canceled altogether. Sony could potentially abandon the handheld project. Initially, PlayStation Portal was intended to resemble Steam Deck and function as a standalone device, but it later became reliant on streaming games through a connected PS5 console. However, recent updates to PlayStation Portal have included a cloud-streaming beta for PS Plus Premium subscribers, allowing them to play games on the device without needing a PS5.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m not the only one eyeing the handheld market expansion. The head of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, has been quite vocal about his aspirations for an Xbox handheld, though it remains to be seen if and when it might materialize, perhaps a few years down the line. Meanwhile, Nintendo is rumored to reveal the Switch 2 in the near future, and they’ve recently confirmed that the new system will be compatible with existing Switch games.

It’s plausible that Sony could re-enter the handheld gaming market, a sector they last explored with the release of the PlayStation Vita in Japan during 2011 (and North America in early 2012). Noteworthy is the fact that the Vita was discontinued in Japan as early as 2019, well before the launch of the PS5.

Prior to this, the PlayStation Portable was launched in Japan in 2004 and North America in 2005. During the mid- to late-2000s, Sony’s handheld device went head-to-head with Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS.
