The debate around AI ethics is already intense, and Sony’s latest move is likely to add to it. They’ve patented a new AI system that can change how games are played in real-time. Essentially, it allows players to create custom filters that automatically remove unwanted elements from gameplay.
The system has incredible features that seem like they’re from a sci-fi movie. It can instantly silence bad language, censor content with black bars, blur images, and even use deepfake technology to swap objects or change what characters say. Sony explains this isn’t just for parents controlling what their children see; it can also help players who are afraid of certain things. For example, users could choose to remove clowns or spiders from the game screen if they want.

This idea understandably worries people about whether AI might compromise an artist’s original intent. For example, some argue that games like The Last of Us Part II deliberately use shocking or difficult scenes to convey the story’s emotional impact. If AI were to remove these intense moments, it could change the work’s meaning, resulting in a simplified and less meaningful experience.
It’s important to stay calm, though. Getting a patent for a technology idea doesn’t always mean the feature will actually be built – it’s often done to protect the idea for potential future use. Sony has patented many forward-thinking concepts – like turning the PS3 into a holographic projector – that never actually became real products. This new patent doesn’t guarantee censorship will be in the PlayStation 6, but it’s definitely something to consider given Sony’s research.
