Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO was asked about PlayStation consoles’ future. Market shift brings predictable answer

Sony recently unveiled a presentation with various statistics, including insights about the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation Plus. Additionally, we got a sneak peek into the kind of games that first-party studios are presently developing. Notably, Hideaki Nishino, the president of SIE, emphasized that Sony’s current business strategy is centered around “Console and More.

We are building on the strengths of the PlayStation platform and PlayStation Studios.

Consoles and subscription

This current lineup of gaming consoles, led by the PlayStation 5 (PS5), has proven to be the most financially successful for Sony. A year ago, it surpassed the earnings of the PlayStation 4 (PS4), and since then, the gap between their profits has widened significantly – generating Sony a staggering revenue of approximately $136 billion. The majority of this revenue is derived from sales of content through the PS Store and subscription services.

  1. In the fiscal year 2024, there was a 14% increase in monthly active users, reaching 124 million. Most people use the PS5 console, but the PS4 still remains very popular hardware.
  2. The same increase occurred in the amount of time spent gaming over the year – in 2024, players spent 51 billion hours playing games.

Over time, there’s been a steady rise in the proportion of PlayStation users opting for the pricier PS Plus Premium membership. In 2022, it accounted for 17% of all subscribers, rising to 19% in 2023 and 22% in 2024. Despite this growth, the Essential subscription option still maintains its popularity among those who use PS Plus.

PlayStation Studios

The presentation further showcased a segmentation of Sony’s game studios, grouped according to the genres they produce. Majority of these studios primarily concentrate on creating single-player games, while just four teams are dedicated exclusively to developing service games.

Some notable game releases for both current and upcoming years were pointed out. Among them, the anticipated title set to launch in 2025 is Ghost of Yotei. Additionally, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and Marvel’s Wolverine have been spotlighted as future releases worth looking forward to.

The future of PlayStation

During a business gathering, Sony Interactive Entertainment‘s CEO, Hideaki Nishino, addressed some queries about PlayStation’s future (as reported by VGC). One of these questions revolved around the potential switch from conventional consoles to cloud-based gaming systems. While he acknowledges this as a potential choice for gamers, he maintains that there is still a strong interest in offline gaming experiences.

It’s clear that cloud gaming is offering a new avenue for gamers to enjoy content, yet it seems that most players still prefer the traditional method of playing games locally, independent of network performance. This notion has been supported by the success of both PS5 and PS5 Pro, in my opinion.

As for the next-gen console following the PS5, Sony is indeed always seeking out fresh opportunities. However, they are currently unable to disclose any information about it.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled to be part of such a vast, passionate community spanning across PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 generations. Needless to say, everyone’s eagerly waiting for what’s next in terms of our next-gen console plans. At the moment, I can’t reveal more, but rest assured, the future of this platform is something we’re deeply focused on. We’re excited about finding innovative ways to enhance your gaming experience with our content and services.

Recent updates suggest that the PS6 project is quite progressed and could possibly be released as early as 2028.
