Sony announces PS5 price increase halfway through generation

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but share the news that Sony has decided to bump up the price of the PlayStation 5 in certain regions mid-generation. This adjustment will be noticeable in markets like Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

Approximately four-and-a-half years after the debut of the PlayStation 5 on store shelves in November 2020, its price has risen to an all-time high in certain regions.

On April 14th, Sony made an announcement that they would be increasing the price of the PS5, starting right away. Due to a tough economic situation with high inflation and unstable currency values, Sony chose to elevate the cost of the PS5 in different regions.

People living in Europe and the UK have to shell out more money to obtain the PS5 Digital Edition, whereas individuals residing in Australia and New Zealand must pay extra for both the PS5 Digital Edition and the standard PS5 model featuring a UHD disc-drive.

Sony blames economic conditions for PS5 price increase

Although the base price of the PS5 Pro has stayed consistent, the prices for the other models have risen, with variations depending on the specific region.

Below is the full breakdown of the new costs:

Just a few days ago, I found myself learning about Sony’s decision to raise the prices of PlayStation Plus in various regions, like Australia, right here.

These hikes fall approximately in the middle of the current game console era, especially considering a potential mid-generation upgrade for the PlayStation 5.

Indeed, Sony isn’t alone among gaming companies facing turbulent economic conditions. Not long after unveiling the Switch 2, Nintendo postponed pre-orders in the U.S. indefinitely because of alterations in tariff regulations set by the American government.
