It’s been announced that the Sonic the Hedgehog film series, derived from Sega’s popular video game franchise, has surpassed $1 billion in worldwide box office earnings. This journey began back in February 2020 and has since grown with two sequels, a television spin-off focusing on Knuckles, and a guest role for the original “Unattractive Sonic” in Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
Initially, the first film generated more than $319 million worldwide, and its 2022 follow-up surpassed that figure by earning over $405 million. As of now, the third installment has brought in $336 million at global box offices (according to Box Office Mojo). Interestingly, this isn’t a new achievement for film series at the box office, as The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.36 billion) and the Resident Evil films ($1.2 billion) have also garnered impressive commercial success.
In a press release, the head of Paramount Pictures, Brian Robbins, stated that the Sonic the Hedgehog series has grown into an indomitable cultural influence with limitless possibilities. With each new installment of Sonic’s journeys setting new standards, we are immensely proud and thrilled to keep sharing tales and characters that strike a chord with global audiences.
In December 2024, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made its debut, featuring the return of fan favorites Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails, along with the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog. Jim Carrey portrayed Dr. Ivo Robotnik, a part he’s expressed interest in reprising if it’s fun for him. On the red carpet at the movie premiere, Carrey quipped that he might need to work more to cover some outstanding expenses, which could delay his retirement.
If you’d rather not go to the cinema, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be available on Blu-ray towards the end of this year. The specific release date is still undecided, but you can preorder a special 4K steelbook version for $45 from Amazon or Walmart, or opt for a regular Blu-ray priced at $36 instead.
