Sonic The Hedgehog Comic Introduces New Characters, Location This Fall

This autumn, IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic series is launching a fresh storyline that serves as an ideal entry point for newcomers. The narrative focuses on established characters such as Shadow and the Chaos Emeralds, along with a brand-new setting for our heroes to investigate. This exciting chapter kicks off in September under the title “The Stage Is Set.

The three-part storyline kicks off with Sonic the Hedgehog Comic Issue 81. Following the disappearance of six out of seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic and Tails embark on an urgent mission to find the remaining one. Their pursuit unexpectedly leads them to a lavish city called Sequin, which is currently bustling with a grand carnival. However, they’re not the only ones in search – Shadow and Rouge are also looking for the last emerald.

The IDW announcement teases fan-loved figures together with a brand new, charming, agile, and seemingly innocent character. Both the primary and supplementary covers for issue #81 display various depictions of a figure dressed as a harlequin jester, fitting considering the citywide carnival setting. This character is yet to appear outside comics, but remember that IDW’s universe has previously integrated into video games—in 2020, Sonic Forces mobile game incorporated two original comic series characters, Tangle and Whisper.

Sega of America’s Michael Cisneros stated in the announcement, “For years now, we’ve collaborated with IDW, translating the world of Sonic to comic books. We strive to make it engaging and enjoyable for both fresh and long-term readers. Though Issue 81 might appear substantial, it serves as an excellent starting point for newcomers! This issue initiates a brand-new storyline brimming with amusement and surprises for Sonic and his companions.

Evan Stanley is penning a new comic, with artwork by Min Ho Kim, which debuts on September 3.
