According to a recent report, Ben Kingsley, the Academy Award-winning actor, will appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in an important part. Although this hasn’t been officially confirmed, fans are already speculating about which character he’ll play.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was a massive hit when it was released in 2024, earning the highest ratings of any film in the series on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming the most financially successful Sonic movie yet. It’s a remarkable turnaround for the franchise, especially considering the early issues with the character’s design.

Paramount has approved a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie even before the third one comes out, and Jeff Fowler will direct again. The films have already featured important characters like Tails (voiced by Colleen Ann O’Shaughnessey), Knuckles (Idris Elba), and Shadow (Keanu Reeves).

Amy Rose, played by Kristen Bell, is confirmed to return after the credits scene of the previous film. However, many mysteries remain, and a new one may have just been uncovered.

The third Sonic movie really solidified Shadow the Hedgehog as a key character and broadened the series’ backstory, moving beyond just Doctor Eggman—though what happens to Eggman next is still unknown. While Jim Carrey might be open to coming back in some capacity, the fourth movie will introduce a brand new villain.

The appearance of Metal Sonic in the post-credits scene of Sonic 3 suggests a possible direction for the character. In the games, Neo Metal Sonic is a more powerful and intelligent version of Metal Sonic, capable of challenging Sonic’s abilities and even copying the skills of others.

I think Ben Kingsley would be absolutely perfect for this role! He’s just so good at playing intimidating bad guys – remember how terrifying he was as Don Logan in Sexy Beast? And then he completely switched gears and was brilliantly sneaky as Trevor Slattery in the Marvel movies. He really knows how to make a villain memorable.

He’s shown he excels at playing smart, subtly frightening villains, making a voice acting or motion-capture role a great fit for this project.

There’s talk that the next Sonic game, Sonic 4, might take ideas from Sonic Heroes, which first featured the character Neo Metal Sonic. This is why many fans believe Kingsley would be a great addition to the project.

I was reading Reddit, and someone made a really good point: if they cast this legendary actor, they need to give him an amazing role. They were hoping he wouldn’t be stuck playing a regular human in a live-action movie, and suggested something cool like Neo Metal Sonic – definitely something that wouldn’t be cheesy or silly.

But not everyone agrees. One fan specifically stated they don’t believe there will be any ‘Neo Metal’ music, only traditional metal tracks, and that the soundtrack will draw inspiration solely from Sonic CD, not Sonic Heroes.

Someone else suggested he’d be perfect as Metal Sonic, but doubted he’d be given any lines. They thought it was unlikely, unless the creators decided to really impress fans by introducing Neo Metal Sonic, which they didn’t think would happen.

People are speculating that Big the Cat or Professor Pickle might be involved, but right now it’s just speculation. We’ll have to wait for an official announcement to know for sure who’s been cast.
