Warning: Spoilers for Song Sung Blue lie ahead, so read on accordingly.
Coming in 2025, Song Sung Blue is a unique and interesting movie. Directed by Craig Brewer, it’s a musical based on the true story of a couple who create a tribute band to Neil Diamond. The film follows their journey with the band, as well as the ups and downs of their personal relationship. Brewer has acknowledged that the story might sound unbelievable, and he understands why some people might find it hard to believe.
For a film like Song Sung Blue, it’s best to go in knowing as little as possible. This can make the experience more original and unexpected. In an interview with TopMob, director Brewer acknowledged that the plot of his new movie might seem shocking to some. He then explained why the film takes an unconventional direction, defying audience expectations.
Honestly, it’s shocking! I think what really gets people is the unexpected turn. For the first forty minutes or so, it feels like a really great, smooth experience – you start to think everything is going to be okay. Then, suddenly, things take a dark turn, and this family, this couple, faces something truly tragic. It’s about how they cope and get through it all.
The movie features Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as Mike and Claire, a couple who start a band dedicated to the music of Neil Diamond, called Thunder & Lightning. The film begins with a hopeful and romantic tone, but takes a heartbreaking turn when Claire is seriously injured in an accident, resulting in the amputation of her leg. It’s challenging to effectively blend optimism with tragedy in a story, and the director, Brewer, faced that difficulty. He also wanted to ensure the film didn’t become overwhelmingly sad.
The biggest challenge for me was finding the right way to tell this story. I wanted to be truthful and realistic, while also capturing the inspiring love and dedication between the people it was about, and how music saved them. It was a balancing act – how long do you linger on the emotional moments? How do you blend inspiration and humor with sadness, without making the audience feel overwhelmed or depressed?
Biopics often involve some changes to the true story for dramatic effect. Director Brewer discussed whether he took those kinds of creative liberties when portraying the lives of Claire and Mike, who died in 2006.
Not exactly. I mostly had to simplify things. When I spoke with Claire Sardinia and her children about making a film based on their lives, I explained that their story was like an opera, but I needed to condense it into a roughly three-and-a-half-minute song. I asked them to share everything, even seemingly small or unimportant details, because I wanted to weave those details into the movie and tell their story as fully and effectively as possible.

Okay, let me tell you about seven musical legends who deserve the biopic treatment, but sadly, I don’t think we’ll ever see their stories on the big screen. I’d be first in line for tickets, honestly! These aren’t just famous names, but artists with incredibly compelling – and often complicated – lives that would make for amazing movies. It’s a real shame these haven’t been made yet, but I’m dreaming of the day they do. I’m talking truly captivating stories, and I’m honestly baffled why Hollywood hasn’t jumped on these yet!
It’s always challenging to make a good music biopic, but especially hard when you want to show both the highs and lows of an artist’s life. However, early reviews of Song Sung Blue suggest director Craig Brewer has successfully struck that balance. This isn’t surprising, as Brewer has experience with both biopics and musical films – he previously directed Hustle & Flow and the well-received Dolemite Is My Name, proving he’s skilled at mixing different moods and connecting with audiences on an emotional level.
After finishing his recent movie, Brewer is now working on a biopic about Snoop Dogg, a project Allen Hughes was previously going to direct. The film promises to share some surprising stories, and it’s definitely something to look forward to. But first, let’s celebrate Brewer’s beautiful and unique telling of the love story in his current film, Song Sung Blue, which is now playing in theaters.
