Brendan Fraser’s portrayal of Dwight D. Eisenhower in the new WWII film, Pressure, isn’t necessarily historically accurate, but it effectively drives the story forward. Fraser depicts the general – and future president – as a forceful and volatile figure, a stark contrast to the calm and collected Eisenhower we typically know. However, that’s okay – the film needs this version of Ike to create dramatic tension. Pressure isn’t really about Eisenhower, though. It’s about the struggle of British meteorologist Group Captain James Stagg (Andrew Scott) to predict the weather for the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944. Stagg is pressured by a demanding Eisenhower and confronted with evidence suggesting severe storms will make an early June invasion disastrous. He’s caught between fulfilling his duty and, well, doing what’s right. As British General Bernard Montgomery (played with flair by Damian Lewis) points out, canceling D-Day would likely mean Allied defeat, but proceeding with the invasion in such conditions would guarantee catastrophic failure and immense loss of life.
The film is built on a fascinating true story: the incredibly tense and crucial weather forecasting for D-Day. While another movie, the TV film Ike: Countdown to D-Day, touched on this subject, this script, by David Haig and Anthony Maras, focuses on the core drama. It centers on two opposing forecasting teams. On one side, you have the relaxed and confident American team, led by Colonel Irving Krick (Chris Messina), who have studied decades of weather patterns and predict clear skies for the invasion. Messina is fantastic as Krick, a character who’s had wartime success but is mostly known for accurately predicting the weather for the Atlanta fire scene in Gone With the Wind – a surprisingly true detail! Then there’s the reserved and difficult Stagg, who insists on working alone and keeps Krick out of his reports to Eisenhower and the generals. We soon learn his gruff exterior hides nerves and the pain of leaving his pregnant wife to take on this vital, secret mission.
Things get complicated when the tension spills outside the central decision-making environment, but that doesn’t happen very often. Mostly, the film tells a focused story with well-developed characters, all brought to life by Scott’s nuanced performance. It’s a perfect opportunity to showcase his subtle acting style – he can portray one emotion while subtly suggesting a completely different inner world through his expressions. The more Stagg stubbornly sticks to his guns, the more the other characters dislike him – and the more we find ourselves rooting for him. His persistence becomes central to who he is.
The difference between Stagg and the robust Eisenhower is striking. Eisenhower prefers clear answers, but he specifically wants Stagg to confirm the weather will allow the D-Day invasion to proceed as planned. Delaying the invasion to avoid storms would mean certain failure, as a force of this size couldn’t remain hidden for weeks. While Krick’s more optimistic forecast is appealing, Fraser portrays Eisenhower’s anger and Stagg’s honest, hesitant delivery in a way that explains why the commander would trust a quiet, unassuming weatherman. Eisenhower clearly respects Stagg’s integrity and courage to deliver unpopular truths.
The simple argument about the weather hints at a larger, deeper conflict at the film’s core. Stagg methodically studies future forecasts, while Krick depends on past experience, and this clash between them represents a struggle between holding onto the familiar and accepting an uncertain future. This internal battle is beautifully reflected in Fraser’s growing worry. It’s a wonderful example of actors subtly enriching the story. What makes Pressure so effective is that it allows us to think beyond the specific historical event it portrays – which is what the best war films ultimately achieve.
