Someday Disney’s Snow White Will Come, But Not This Year

As a longtime Disney enthusiast who has watched Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs countless times, I must say that I am both excited and apprehensive about Rachel Zegler’s upcoming live-action adaptation of this beloved classic. On one hand, I can hardly wait to see Zegler in the title role, and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen promises an intriguing twist on the original tale. The teaser trailer and first look have definitely piqued my curiosity, even if the CGI dwarfs do have a slightly uncanny-valley quality.

It seems clear that Rachel Zegler is all set and actively preparing for the upcoming press tour, considering she made an appearance at D23 this year and unveiled the initial teaser trailer for Disney’s live-action adaptation of Snow White, originally released as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937. Gal Gadot, her co-star, also attended the event, hinting that her portrayal of the Evil Queen will be wicked, magical, and intriguingly delicious. The movie had a brief pause before returning to the spotlight, with its initial release date set for March 22, 2024. However, it appears that we’re now in for more promotional activities as the long-awaited film is finally gearing up for a comeback. Let’s delve into the latest updates on the trailer, cast and crew details, and its expected release date.

What happens in the trailer?

Essentially, the film’s introduction features Zegler’s Snow White crooning “Whistle While You Work” with her CGI companions. Gadot’s Wicked Queen then inquires of her mirror who is the most beautiful among them all. It seems clear that the apple our freshly-minted Disney princess reaches for could well be, to use Charli XCX’s words, rotten to the very core.

What did the first look show us?

In October 2023, Disney revealed that the release date of “Disney’s Snow White” was delayed by a year. To keep fans excited, they shared a sneak peek of the film, showcasing Zegler dressed as Snow White with the seven dwarfs nearby. This glimpse had an uncanny resemblance to the uncanny valley, raising concerns about the dwarfs’ appearance appearing overly unnatural and somewhat frightening. The question arises: could the animation team find a way to make these dwarfs look less unsettling? Is this a valid concern that might warrant the film’s cancellation? Maybe it’s worth considering…

Who else is in the cast and crew?

According to Teen Vogue, the complete ensemble features Andrew Burnap portraying Jonathan, Ansu Kabia as the Hunter, Dujonna Gift as Maple, Martin Klebba playing Grumpy, and Colin Michael Carmichael in a yet-to-be-revealed part.

The movie is helmed by Marc Webb and co-produced by Marc Platt and Jared LeBoff, while Callum McDougall serves as executive producer. Notably, the music in this film will be provided by the duo Pasek and Paul (known for “Dear Evan Hansen”), who we anticipate may pen a line as captivating as their previous work from “Dogfight”: “Even if some small-minded jerk with a puny manhood tries to bring you down, don’t let it get you down!”

When’s the new release date?

As a movie enthusiast who’s always eagerly awaiting the next big release, I was thrilled about Disney’s Snow White being scheduled for March 22, 2024. However, it looks like the dwarves and I will have to wait a bit longer; the film has been pushed back to March 21, 2025. Ah well, one more year of anticipation – let’s just sing about it instead: “Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to 2025 we go!”
