Some Switch 1 Games Will Get Free Updates On Switch 2

The anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 hits stores in June, boasting backward compatibility with numerous Nintendo Switch 1 games. Certain popular titles will offer enhanced, paid versions tailored for the Switch 2, while others will receive complimentary upgrades for the latest console.

Based on information from the official Nintendo Switch 2 website, Nintendo plans to roll out updates for certain Nintendo Switch 1 games aimed at enhancing their playability on the new console. The company has stated that the specifics of these updates will differ by game title, potentially boosting performance or introducing support for features like GameShare in select titles.

Nintendo has confirmed that the following Switch 1 games will receive free Switch 2 updates:

  • Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics
  • Game Builder Garage
  • New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
  • Pokemon Scarlet
  • Pokemon Violet
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
  • The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Previously noted, Nintendo plans to launch enhanced, paid versions of some Switch Originals like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and Super Mario Party Jamboree for Switch 2. These upgrades will offer new capabilities and features such as Joy-Con mouse compatibility and additional content.

Nintendo hasn’t disclosed the cost for these paid updates yet, but they did confirm that the expansion packs for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are going to be complimentary for those who have the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be released on June 5 for $450 USD. At its launch, it will come with Mario Kart World, the newest installment in the Mario Kart series, and access to a variety of GameCube games for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
