Approximately five and a half years after the passing of Luke Perry, who was famously known for his role on “Beverly Hills 90210”, his on-screen love interest Shannen Doherty succumbed to cancer that had been a part of her life since she reprised her role as Brenda for the revival. It’s now been a year since her death, and during this time, several of her friends and co-stars have honored her memory by offering tributes. In a unique move, Ian Ziering chose this moment to publicly express his thoughts for the first time.
In the aftermath of Doherty’s death in July 2024, the Internet mourned in the usual way, with celebrity posts and fan-shared videos from her best movie and TV performances. (That clip of her, Luke Perry and Matthew Perry still hits.) When Sharknado vet Ian Ziering didn’t immediately air out his feelings online, some fans were quick to get critical and gossipy regarding the possible reasons why. He addressed that response in a touching and heartfelt Instagram post reflecting on the past year, saying:
Last year when she passed away, I chose not to share anything about it, and for that, I received criticism. However, I stand firm by my decision, explaining that expressing grief is an intimate process; everyone copes differently, and it’s essential to let people mourn in their own unique way.
Ziering mentioned that Shannen had been ill for nearly a decade before her passing. During this period, he might have assumed she would overcome each hurdle, which made it difficult for him to accept the tragic reality when it finally occurred.
Ziering went on to discuss how he and the remaining cast members of the show “Beverly Hills 90210” still meet up, but it’s become increasingly challenging as two of their colleagues have sadly passed away. To put it in simpler terms, he explained that while they still get together, it has been more difficult due to the loss of two fellow cast members in recent times.
Over the course of the last year, I’ve run into some of my old co-stars on occasion. The absence of Shannen, as well as Luke, has been difficult when we gather. Such a void doesn’t heal; instead, it shifts the layout in your heart. I find myself longing for Shannen. Our disagreements were frequent in the early days of 90210, given our robust personalities, but there was always mutual respect between us.
One reason why Shannen Doherty’s time on 90210 stands out so vividly is because it was relatively brief. The young actress rapidly (and perhaps unfairly) developed a reputation for her attitude and actions off-camera, which resulted in her leaving the show and making headlines in tabloids.
Since then, people have begun to see her 90210 years differently, as she herself brought attention to the challenges she encountered with studio executives during that time. In conclusion, Ian Ziering paid tribute to the bold and unyielding spirit that was so characteristic of Shannen Doherty throughout her career.
Indeed, Shannen, you’re frequently on my mind. Your determination, your spirit, and the compassion hidden beneath, seldom fully revealed – it stays with me always.
Regrettably, Doherty wasn’t included in the In Memoriam segment during the Oscars broadcast in March, a decision that drew criticism not only from Jennie Garth, but also from Tori Spelling.
Tori Spelling And More Pay Tribute One Year After Shannen Doherty’s Death
Tori Spelling posted a heartfelt message looking back on a year without her longtime companion, as fellow “Charmed” cast members Rose McGowan and Holly Marie Combs also offered thoughtful remarks.
- TORI SPELLING: It’s been a year. Grief is weird. It presents itself in different ways and at different times but never fades. Just like your memory. In fact, it burns epically in my soul more and more as the days pass. You and I already told the beginning of our story. The evolution of our story. Now I’m living the after. The part where I carry everything you taught me.
- ROSE MCGOWAN: One year today you had to fly, but we on the physical plane of existence, think about you every day with love and gratitude.
- HOLLY MARIE COMBS: It’s been a year but it’s been a minute for me. You still light the way for so many. And you are missed by so many. Thank you to everyone who did a #shandosunday post or prayer or just a passing thought. She would be so pleased. 🤍
If you’re one of those who want to honor Brenda Walsh’s iconic moments from Beverly Hills 90210, you can do so by streaming the show on Paramount+, as it’s now available with a subscription.
