Sofía Vergara Wants to Revisit ‘Modern Family’ and Suggests Doing a ‘TV Movie’; She Jokes to Ed O’Neill: ‘Don’t Die’ Before

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of television and film, I can wholeheartedly appreciate Sofía Vergara’s longing for a reunion with her “Modern Family” cohorts, particularly Ed O’Neill. The camaraderie, humor, and raw talent that the cast displayed during their tenure on the beloved sitcom were truly unparalleled.

Sofía Vergara declares Ed O’Neill isn’t allowed to die.

After receiving an Emmy nomination for her lead role in Netflix’s crime drama “Griselda,” the Colombian star expressed interest in reprising her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett from ABC’s “Modern Family” in a recent cover story for EbMaster. However, there’s one stipulation: Ed O’Neill, who portrayed her husband Jay on the sitcom, must be alive to participate alongside her.

“I’d die to be on that set,” Vergara says. “It’d be so much fun. A TV movie, maybe?”

Currently, Vergara thinks it’s premature to resurface the Pritchett family on-screen, but she often playfully discusses the idea with O’Neill.

Following his appearance in the FX mini-series “Clipped,” where O’Neill played the role of the former owner of the L.A. Clippers, Donald Sterling, Vergara jokingly commented, “You seem quite elderly.”

“Vergara often teases Ed by saying, ‘Ed, stay alive! If we’re going to do a sequel, it’ll take some time and you’re the eldest among us. You can’t be gone,'” Vergara told EbMaster.

For Sofia Vergara, the Emmys aren’t foreign territory. She garnered four consecutive nominations in the supporting comedy actress category, from 2010 to 2013, for her portrayal of Gloria in “Modern Family.” However, despite these recurring nominations, Vergara hasn’t taken home an award – although many feel she should have won at least one Emmy during her tenure on the ABC sitcom.

“Sarah Vergara playfully remarks about her ‘Modern Family’ colleague, Julie Bowen, who won the Emmy twice for playing Claire. She says, ‘That’s what I tell Julie – I nominate four times! And since one of those is now yours, I let you keep it at your house, but don’t forget who earned it!'”

In a surprising twist, the dynamic between Sofia Vergara and Jerry Bowen off-screen is quite contrasting to their on-screen rivalry. Vergara recently disclosed that Bowen had sent her a video of himself voting for Vergara this year at the Emmys, an event where she was nominated. Notably, Vergara’s nomination this year marks her as the first Colombian-born actress and the second Latina to be nominated in the limited series category.

Vergara mentioned that the “Modern Family” cast has stayed connected since the show concluded in 2020. In an interview with EbMaster, co-creator Steven Levitan said she was the cast member who everyone preferred to have as their dinner companion.

I’ll share my perspective: “Sofía possesses a unique blend of strength, wit, and charm that sets her apart. She’s innately wise, able to uplift others effortlessly… She’s never been one to put on airs. Regardless of the accolades she’s earned, when she made mistakes, she had a knack for poking fun at herself first, creating an atmosphere on set where it was okay to join in her laughter.”

“Griselda” is now streaming on Netflix.
