Sofa Digital Adds Three Specialty Film Channels, as FAST Markets, Led by Samsung TV Plus, Boom in Brazil (EXCLUSIVE)

In Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL – Sofa Digital, a Brazilian indie specialty channel network, plans to unveil at Rio2C 2025 the debut of three fresh specialty channels on Brazil’s Free Advertising-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) platforms.

The streaming channels Filmelier TV Hope, Filmelier TV Passion, and Filmelier TV Real Life will be available on FAST platforms such as Samsung TV Plus, LG Channels, TCL Channels, Pluto TV, and Roku Channels, according to Fabio Lima, the CEO of Sofa.

Sofa’s streaming channels Filmelier TV Hope, Filmelier TV Passion, and Filmelier TV Real Life are coming soon to Samsung TV Plus, LG Channels, TCL Channels, Pluto TV, and Roku Channels, as announced by Fabio Lima, the CEO of Sofa.

Just as the original Filmelier TV, the three freshly launched channels offer a 24-hour rotation of Portuguese-dubbed independent movies. Filmelier TV Hope specializes in films with narratives revolving around faith and overcoming adversity. For those seeking romance and passion, Filmelier TV Passion provides romantic comedies, passionate crime dramas, and similar productions. Lastly, Filmelier TV True Life features biographical films, documentaries, war films, and historical pieces, as announced by Lima.

In simpler terms, these specialized channels are progressively joining various FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) platforms not just in Brazil, but also Mexico and other Spanish-speaking Latin American countries. As a result, Sofa currently offers a total of seven FAST channels, with the recent additions.

On May 27th, Lima will participate in a discussion at Rio2C, a platform that emphasizes FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) channels, which are currently experiencing significant growth in Brazil. This will be followed by a masterclass he’ll conduct on building streaming audiences on the 29th and a panel talk analyzing the economics of streaming on the 30th.

In Brazil, the market for FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) is thriving, with Samsung TV Plus at the helm as the top player. This service was initially introduced by Samsung Electronics, a global leader in smart TV devices based in South Korea, back in 2015 within their home country. Subsequently, they expanded the services to Europe and the United States, eventually launching it in Brazil in 2020 as well. As reported by Aline Jabbour, director of Samsung TV Plus for Latin America.

The platform can be accessed in a total of 30 nations and boasts 88 million daily active viewers, those who are connected for at least 15 minutes each day. Brazil ranks second on Samsung TV Plus’ list, trailing only the United States with 22.4 million active users. This implies that there are approximately 89.6 million potential customers who enjoy the platform’s content.

Samsung TV Plus offers approximately 120 diverse channels in Brazil, including pay-TV options like CNN Brasil and Record News, plus indie specialty channels such as Sofa’s bouquet. Additionally, it features channels from social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and more, such as Case TV, which holds the rights for some major sports events in Brazil.

The platform additionally offers specialized IP (intellectual property) channels, each dedicated to a specific program. For instance, it could include “Os Dez Mandamentos” from TV Record, “Malhacao” from TV Globo, or “MasterChef”.

In Brazil, telenovelas dominate Samsung TV Plus, with news, movie, and children’s channels coming next, according to Jabbour. However, sports channels like Case TV take the lead when they broadcast crucial live soccer games or during the Summer Olympics.

Lima and Jabbour believe that the rapid growth of FAST in Brazil can be attributed to multiple reasons. One crucial factor is that the service is offered at no cost, which significantly contributes to its popularity in a developing nation like Brazil, where people are known for being budget-conscious consumers.

The service is user-friendly; upon turning on your television, a program automatically appears on the screen, and switching channels is straightforward.

Brazilians are accustomed to television programming that is broadcast without charge, featuring shows interspersed with commercials – except during soccer games.

Ultimately, content has been divided into distinct categories. “Curators now arrange information tailored for particular groups. We find ourselves in a phase of the industry where the role of curation is crucial. Curation is the future of dissemination,” Lima explained to EbMaster.

Jabbour highlights that the business model of FAST (Free Ad Supported Television) thrives on targeted advertising, which is made possible by Samsung’s advanced software known as Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). This software gathers data from every smart TV it is installed on, tracking what programs each viewer watches, whether they’re using streaming services like Netflix or Prime Video, traditional pay-TV, open-TV, or FAST channels, and it can even identify if the viewers are playing video games. In essence, it keeps tabs on the specific channels and shows that viewers tune into.

Jabbour stated that while it’s uncertain who might be observing, we have a precise understanding of each device’s consumer behavior. Advertising on FAST platforms is significantly more advanced compared to traditional open TV. FAST stands for Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television, which represents the advancement and blend of conventional open TV, pay TV, and contemporary streaming benefits.
